What do you do when, no matter how hard you try, you just can't get to seep?
Personally, I listen to music.

Put on a movie or old tv show I am not interested in and set the tv turn off timer for 30 minutes max.

Jimmy Durante recommended counting your blessings instead of sheep.

The older I get, and the more I run into this problem, the only thing that (almost) ALWAYS works, is to just get up, and do something (watch tv.....whatever), however long is necessary, until I finally start feeling 'sleepy' again.....and then just go back to bed. The other thing that seems to sometimes work, is to get a book (usually, a 'boring' one is better) and read it, again, until starting to feel tired. The problem with both of these, of course, is not getting to the point that I feel tired again.......which happens, and simply means that I won't be getting any more sleep that night.....and, of course, also then means being very tired all the next day. Go figure !! SAVE FERRIS

Reading the quibbling and fighting on the Politics Board can BORE one to sleep pretty darn quickly.

msdemos There was a serious discussion about this on Public Radio and the professional recommendation was to read something you have ZERO interest in .. like a manual that came with some tool or appliance ... they claim it works better than reading something you ARE interested in. I think that's why the old tv or movies that I have already seen works for me. If it's something I want to see ... I force myself to stay awake.

What do you do when, no matter how hard you try, you just can't get to sleep? What I do is fill a coffee mug with milk, and then heat it in the microwave for two minutes. I then drink the warm milk while reading an actual book ( not an eBook). Warm milk is supposed to function as a mild sedative, and along with reading the book, this helps me fall to asleep pretty quickly.

Depends on the situation. If I am awake because I am just not tired, I will watch TV or a movie.
If I am awake because I am worried about something I will make a cup of warm vanilla milk and cuddle with a fuzzy blanket.
If I am awake because of something irritating me (skin-wise) I will take a warm shower and pay special attention to the area bothering me.

Jimmy Durante recommended counting your blessings instead of sheep. Just for the record, Irving Berlin wrote it, and Crosby sang it (to Rosemary Clooney in White Christmas) before Durante did. - submitted from my "Unsolicited and Generally Useless Trivia" files (as Durante himself used to say, I got a million of 'em)

I take some Nyquil.
I only go for that option when I've got a hard deadline for waking up, I've only got 4-5 hours left to get any sleep, and it doesn't look like I'd otherwise be falling asleep any time soon. Nyquil is good because I can control the dosage, so that I'm not too groggy when I wake up 3.5-4.5 hours later. Nyquil knocks me out relatively quickly, especially in the middle of the night.
I also take a larger dose of Nyquil occasionally when I want to sleep for 8-10 hours. Maybe once every three weeks I'll do that. Occasionally I'll take a melatonin tablet instead. The melatonin doesn't work as consistently for me, though.
Naturally, I don't usually sleep more than six hours. But normally I have no trouble falling asleep either.
