Never an especially outstanding director. A few successes in the late 1980s and early 1990s gave way to just a stream of mediocrity that hasn't let up.

He was the director on the movie version of A Sound of Thunder but he wanted to get rid of the butterfly plot point which mortified Ray Bradbury, who called him an idiot in interviews. Bradbury's agent sent his client a giant inflatable butterfly afterwards.

I grew up watching his movies. Cutthroat Island The Long Kiss Goodnight Die Hard 2 A Nightmare on Elm Street 4 Deep Blue Sea Cliffhanger When you put it that way I liked all of them except the Long Kiss Goodnight. I think Geena Davis was badly cast in Cutthroat Island but other than that I liked the film itself. I guess he was more of the journeyman director and nothing wrong with that. Could use more of that these days.

He was never on par with Spielberg or Scorsese, but back in the late 80's to early 90's, he made some entertaining movies.
I like:
Nightmare on Elm Street 4 - Decent guilty pleasure Die Hard 2 - my least favorite of the first three, but fun Adventures of Ford Fairlane - Diceman at his peak Cliffhanger The Long Kiss Goodnight - Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson are an entertaining team Deep Blue Sea - fun monster movie
Everything else he's done is mediocre or terrible, but he gets a lifetime pass from me due to those earlier films I listed.

Nightmare 4, Cliffhanger, and Deep Blue Sea are all great fun.
Die Hard 2 is okay, but unfortunately placed between two way better Die Hard movies. His Exorcist prequel is the lesser of the two. I think I saw The Cleaner but don't remember anything.
Been wanting to see Long Kiss Goodnight.

Cutthroat Island isn't a good movie but it's a lot of fun and boasts one of the greatest film scores ever.

Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, Long Kiss Goodnight and Deep Blue Sea are good.
Cutthroat Island was poor. Devil's Pass was poor yet vaguely interesting.
And how is he not the director of Drop Zone? Could have sworn that was one of his.

Could have sworn that was one of his. Oh yeah, I forgot he made Devil's Pass. I actually kind of like that movie, it's very creepy and fascinating at the same time. Obvioulsy it asks you to stretch your imagination but if the movie handles it's plot in the right way I am able to do that. It isn't a good movie but it is a compelling mystery film in it's own right and uses the found footage gimmick the right way. John Badham directs Drop Zone but I think it feels more like a bad Tony Scott film than a Renny Harlin film.

Didn't he do some movie with John Cena? 12 Rounds I think it's called.
He was also the original director of Alien 3 before he dropped out of the film.
