Do you have any recommendations? I like to start chronologically, with the talkies. Thanks! I don't think I have watched any Korean movie made before 2000 or so. They make very good thrillers and action movies - I don't know if that's your thing. There are also many historical movies. Best known Korean directors are I think: Bong Joon-HoPark Chan-WookKim Ki-DukThat would be a good place to start. If you are not averse to zombie movies, the recent "Train to Busan" is fantastic. It is not gory, it's just an insane thrill ride. Yeah, not my thing, thanks though ... I love universal dramas, conversational, emphasis on screenplay and acting.. Also, because I can't muster enough energy to watch as many movies as I'd like, and because I do this for a learning experience as well, I try to start at the 1930s.. I also notice what a dip movies (and music) took after I was born (1982), but if anyone has recommendations of foreign movies, right after silent pictures, I'll watch em.

Please pardon the inclusion of Ozu's "I Was Born, But..." and "...Floating Weeds" in my previous post. They are silent. Talkies came rather late to Japan. However, I remembered them as talking pictures. This happens to me all the time. I will watch a foreign with subtitles but in my memory it was in English. This happens especially if I become deeply involved with the movie. So, I am going to leave them on the list. They are great films that should be seen, regardless.
