I try not to but when people think Arrival is a masterpiece, it's really hard not to laugh.

No, pretty much. but... I will admit that some people seem to like just about any random junk and that crap I got to admit I at least somewhat look down on that as it makes me wonder why they like those movies at times. but with that said... I am not going to treat the person like crap or anything like that over it as that would make me a snob etc and obviously I don't want that happening. to be a bit more specific on what I consider 'random junk'... like say the Hallmark channel and the like. because once your used to your typical semi-mainstream/mainstream level of quality you can just see those movies are pretty weak as there is almost nothing good going for them. like you can just see a lot is missing from those movies compared to your more typical A-list ones. hell, even when you drift a bit outside of the A-list, you can still find movies that might be considered 'bad' that still have some stuff going for them to make them enjoyable to watch but that Hallmark channel variation types of movies just tend to be quite dull from what little bits and pieces I have seen. I am sure you get the gist @jamesavalon I think the problem is... people in general seem to use the word 'masterpiece' a bit too often, which makes it lose it's high praise effect, as there are very few of those out there in general if you ask me. because while what movies qualify as a masterpiece will vary from person-to-person, if a person uses that word fairly often on movies then it basically loses it's desired effect which it no longer retains that high level of praise that the word implies basically. p.s. hell, even in my own opinion... while there is nine movies I gave a 10/10, I would not personally label all of them as a 'masterpiece'. but one movie I do label a masterpiece is my IMDb2 avatar (i.e. Road to Perdition (2002)) as it just combines everything that's great about movies which is great cinematography/solid emotional response (and the like)/interesting characters/great score etc etc.
