CaptainMidnight( the uploader) brings up some pretty good points here, personally I would be okay if Marvel just decided to retire the character permanently from the MCU once RDJ decides to exit. Just saying, trying to find another person to fill those shoes is gonna be difficult and a lot of people will have a hard time getting over the idea of anyone other than RDJ being the character. Unlike James Bond, Sherlock Holmes, Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster, Batman, Spider-Man, The Joker, and even The Hulk this is not really a situation where the character is eternal and therefore can be played and reinterpreted for many years to come in in various mediums and portrayed by various performers. Iron Man was not an A-lister when his own movie came out so when it became the megahit that it did and launched a cinematic universe people took an instant liking to the character and a large reason as to why was because of how RDJ played the part for the screen. Ten years later, its really hard not to notice the influence RDJ's performance as the character has had on virtually every appearance in literally every media creation Marvel has produced featuring him - This is true especially in the comics. I have no doubt somebody will try down the road, but if they do it would be wise not to do it too soon - I think even a whole decade is a "too soon" situation as well in this case.
I'll admit I was familiar with Iron Man well before his first movie and knew enough to be questionable of RDJ's casting, but now I cannot picture anybody else in the role, I can't even get his voice of out of my head when I read the character's dialog in a book.

They can recast Iron Man. Tony Stark is the one that shouldn't be. Marvel even messed that up with the young CGI Tony being a younger RDJ. So you can't do the teenage Tony Stark thing. Only thing you can do is put another character in the suit.

Iron Man was done so well just like Wolverine that it will be tremendously difficult to replace the role now.
After Robert Downey Jr is done playing the part they'd need to wait many many years before getting a new one.

Never say never. But I think it will be the most interesting thing about this whole MCU endeavor whether these second-row characters made famous by popular actors will survive an actor-change and demonstrate some market sustainability.
Is IM so broadly popular or just RDJ playing him? With Spiderman or even Hulk to lesser extent it's clear, but with the other MCU protagonists...

I won't rule it out as impossible but it'd be exceedingly difficult.

It's probably because these are their 1st high profile movies. Hulk and Spider-man have had their movies before the MCU. Remember the resistance to Garfield getting Spider-man and them not doing Spider-man 4 with Maguire even when it came out that he had a bad back during Spider-man 3 (and he's currently twice Holland's age)? There was less resistance to Holland being Spider-man than there was for Garfield. And I think there will be less for the X-men, also (besides Logan), since they've had multiple actors in those roles.
