Like Captain America and Austin Powers, John Spartan is a man out of his time. A man who has a habit of destroying every building he enters and leaves yelling "PHOENIX!!" as it crumbles. It does have a greater sense of humor then most action movies, particularly Sandra Bullock constantly flubbing standard action one-liners or just straight up asking Spartan if he wants to have sex with her. Less successful is the subplot with Dennis Leary and his band of bums refusing to conform to the idyllic society of San Angeles. Never makes much sense to even have John Spartan put away for the involuntary manslaughter of the 30 hostages. Phoenix later admits they were already dead. The cops of 1996 weren't able to figure this out or give Spartan the benefit of the doubt. I mean, it's not like Phoenix was a trustworthy person to begin with.
