My standard reply to these threads is always: Terrence Malick's latest films. I think that he's doing his best work right now and is simply not being understood, like Kubrick's films weren't usually understood at the time of their release. They will be getting very different kind of reviews a decade or two from now.
Not that all audiences and critics are against him, but there's definitely enough "Malick shouldn't write his own scripts since he is borderline incoherent" reviews and opinions out there. Anyway, To The Wonder was probably the biggest movie experience to me since first seeing 2001: A Space Odyssey at the age of 10 or so.
