Sandman’s question here makes me think of a question in which everyone here may be interested (at least, I am)... Do you have any opinions about movies that greatly differ from the consensus on critical sites (e.g., Rotten Tomatoes, MetaCritic, etc.)? Now, it could be well-regarded movies you can’t stand, or badly-reviewed movies that you love, or (I suppose) somewhere in between. What say you?

Greatest Showman is where I really question critics.

Gravity. Fans and critics alike seem to think this was a fantastic film. I thought it was one of the most boring, ridiculous things I'd ever seen.

Ghostbusters 2016. I like the film, but practically everyone else hates it with a passion.

The MCU flicks get mixed reviews overall, yet I enjoy them immensely.

Reminds me of the arguments between the 2 movie critics hosts, Siskel and Ebert for example. They used to get into rather heated arguments, even to the point it made me uncomfortable. I sort of liked that though. Often it was quite humorous. It's not easy to be really objective. A movie can be well made and I still might not like it, for quite a few reasons. The critic Pauline Kael used to upset quite a few people, including filmmakers.
One example I could give is 'Get Out'. I loved it, very Hitchcock like. My sister didn't, and didn't even think it was well acted, which she pointed out. I mentioned Siskel and Ebert to her. I thought, some people might justify not liking an otherwise well made movie by thinking it wasn't. I could be disappointed in a movie and pick it apart as well, subjectively.
Good question.

Shawshank Redemption. I turned it off after 20 minutes. Didn't think it was bad at all, I just didn't care for the director's style and had better things to do with my time. (I had read the original novella so I knew exactly what the plot was going to be.)

Only God Forgives. This got booed at Cannes, ripped apart by critics & audiences alike but I thought this little film by Refn was utterly fantastic. Definitely a slow burn that can test peoples' patience but I was fascinated by it. One of my favorite films of 2013.

Slumdog Millionaire. Not a terrible movie, but pretty forgettable on a first viewing and even a bit annoying at times on a rewatch. Maybe it's just that I wanted to like it at first, but it gets worse the more I think about it. I can't believe it won Best Picture.

Another one is The Visit. People called it Shyamalan's comeback, but all I saw was a bad movie.

Think people were just comparing it unfavorably to the much more accessible Drive. The other two Refn films I've seen, Valhalla Rising and The Neon Demon are similarly more abstract and ambiguous.

@winterssuicide While I don't think it's boring, it's definitely nothing special like it's made out to be. maybe it's the 3D stuff in why they overpraised it? (I only watch it in 2D and the way I see it... if a movie relies on 3D to sell a movie to the audience then it's not really that great in the first place as a quality movie should remain a quality movie regardless of whether a movie makes good use of the 3D or not) so are are at least somewhat in agreement here especially on the overpraise from critics/fans thinking it was amazing when it's no where near that. in terms of space themed movies I think Moon (2009) (8/10) is easily the best of that genre as that is something special. in fact, I don't think there is another space themed movie I consider amongst My Favorite Movies in general outside of Moon. p.s. I have seen it twice so far (Dec 9th 2013/Feb 16th 2014) but it got worse for me on a re-watch and is barely clinging to Thumbs Up status for me. I gave it a 5.5-6/10 (barely a Thumbs Up). kevin Hell, I have not even seen that movie and I would say 'forgettable' (at best) is likely true given my impression. I highly doubt I would want to re-watch that movie had I seen it. hi224 I completely agree on Get Out as while it was a enjoyable enough one time viewing it has no re-watch appeal and that's where movies are ultimately made or broke for me is whether I want to re-watch them from time-to-time or not as the years pass. hence, Thumbs Down for Get Out at the end of the day. hell, I just noticed Get Out has a 99% on RT which is a total joke. that movie is nothing special for sure and my guess is it will be mostly forgotten as time passes. another thing that's laughable is that based on their tomato meter score Get Out ranks #3 movie of all-time when I am willing to bet that the vast majority of people out there would place that no where near #3 of all-time. hell, I am willing to bet many people have never heard of that movie. just looking at the Top 10 movies of 2017 based on RT website... I have seen 4, will be 5, out of the 10 and I only mildly like 2, soon to be 3, of them. p.s. www.rottentomatoes.com/top/ ; looking at this and IMDb, I think IMDb is more inline with wide opinion than RT is.

basing it on what RT shows for it's Top 10 movies of each year for the following years, here is what I gave a Thumbs Down amongst those movies in the current decade...
2017 = Get Out(#1)/Dunkirk(#2)/Logan(#7) 2016 = nothing listed in the Top 10 this year that I have seen is Thumbs Down, so I won't list anything for this year. 2015 = Mad Max: Fury Road(#1)/It Follows(#6)/Carol(#8) 2014 = Whiplash(#4) 2013 = 12 Years a Slave(#2)/Her(#5)/Mud(#6)/American Hustle(#7)/Inside Llewyn Davis(#9) (but Gravity(#1) is pretty close to making this list) 2012 = Argo(#1)/The Avengers(#3)/Looper(#4)/The Cabin in the Woods(#6)/Moonrise Kingdom(#7) 2011 = The Artist(#2)/Moneyball(#6) 2010 = Toy Story(#1)/The Social Network(#2)/Inside Job(#6)/A Prophet(#8)/127 Hours(#10)
those movies listed above are average at best with some being boring etc. also, had I seen all of the movies in RT's Top 10 for those given years chances are more would be listed above.
with that said, on the other side of the coin... the only movies that are special of RT's Top 10 movies of the year from 2010-2017 are... Skyfall (2012)(#2) and True Grit (2010)(#5). Skyfall is within my Top 26 movies and True Grit is within my Top 56 movies in general.

The Departed. Acting was poor, plot was non-existent. Pointless remake.
