I don't buy that brainwashing makes conceptual sense. It rests on a notions that (a) people don't change their views over time, and (b) people can "really" have beliefs, dispositions, etc. other than the ones that are presently obtaining for them.

The idea has to be implanted by external forces though. I would agree with you that a definition of brainwashing that doesn't admit this or tries to say people are coerced to believe something is just nonsense. Okay, but I don't buy that it happens, and simply saying that it does is not at all persuasive to me. You'd first need to argue for it being coherent conceptually, where it has a demarcation criterion that makes sense with respect to typical brainwashing talk.
