Actually mindfulness stems from Buddhism. Mindfulness is exactly what it sounds like. Being mindful of who you are and your place in the universe.
Stoicism is more about controlling emotions.
They can intersect but one can be mindful with out being stoic and vice versa.

Thanks. It does seem to have something worthwhile to it, although the market has been flooded, I think, with too many books on the subject which made me think, at the time, that it was a passing fad. I shall certainly investigate the concept further now - and good point about the Buddhist origins.

I much prefer narcissism. It's always good to know there's somebody desperately in love with me.

Like any new self help program everyone jumps on board writing a book. In that aspect it is a fad. Eventually it will die down and you will not hear that much about it.

If you are not mindful, the parasites around you will take advantage of you. Like a deer surrounded by lions and hyenas. I don't practice it though

Mindfulness is a Buddhist principle that has been around forever. The same principle is in the Bible. Matthew 6:34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

For people of the west, it may be a consumerist fad

I don't see why that can't true.

Here to stay. Think about how many are so caught up in themselves they can't see straight. Its about then, their feelings and thoughts. While it may seem close to be narcissistic they really only think of number one in what they do.

It's evidence based practice when it comes to anxiety and depression, and for whatever reason we're having a pandemic of anxiety and depression in North America right now.
For many it comes down to a simple choice: Buy into mindfulness practice or continue to suffer.

The safety manager where I work posted a sign talking about the "ABC's of fork lift mindfulness"
Just thought it was interesting.

As the other post said, it's got a history behind it but like a lot of things, it's been dumbed down for today's modern 'audience'.
