In many Western movies and TV shows, men are depicted wearing open shirts that reveal long, woolen "union suits". I can't understand how those men could work in the hot summer sun wearing those things. Didn't lightweight men's underwear exist in those days?
Speaking of undergarments, I also can't believe that pioneer and homestead women wore those horribly constricting corsets, especially when working the land and other hard domestic chores.

But BATouttaheck didn’t you know? That’s just a very fancy corset! “Long John Silver’s underwear for discerning Long John Silvers, along with food from the fast-food chain Long John Silver’s.” I’m starting to think that we’re a trifle silly…

NalkarjMight as well be silly when the "question" is pretty silly.
BUT It was fun digging out the photos. The Distant Trumpet one of Claude Akins as Seely Jones is mine taken off'n the TV and posted on IMDb - I wish it was clearer. What a surprise when the Treasure Island pictures popped up while Google-ing LONG JOHNs

I wonder if the characters in the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBiEN franchise wore long woolen underwear in that tropical climate.

As for : "Speaking of undergarments, I also can't believe that pioneer and homestead women wore those horribly constricting corsets, especially when working the land and other hard domestic chores." IF the "pioneers" wore them at all, they wouldn't have worn them everyday. They much more likely were for special occasions when they wanted to look "right" ... as in fashionable. Rather like mom changing from her "housedress" and putting on a girdle and a nice dress to go out to dinner or into the city to see a play. That link posted earlier de-bunks some of the myths about corsets. Thinking / writing that they wore them to work in the fields is ... well....
