Yeah they’re (were) good but nowhere near one of the best metal bands of all time imo.
Not really sad news. They haven’t made a decent album in 2 decades.

I kinda agree with Nicko's Nose, though I wouldn't argue with ranking them as one of the best metal bands of all time (on sheer influence they're probably top 5; most all of extreme metal was influenced by them), and I thought Christ Illusion was quite good (rest of their recent stuff is forgettable, though). Kinda sad to see them retiring right as thrash is in the midst of such a big revival.

I once considered Slayer my favorite band, but I haven't been following their recent albums releases. I wish them luck with their farewell tour.

For me, Slayer were a band I respected more than I actually enjoyed listening to. Their brand of extreme thrash metal was never something I'd listen to regularly, as I preferred Black Sabbath, Metallica and Pantera when it came to the big metal bands.
Still though, I acknowledge that Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman (RIP) are/were both very talented guitarists/songwriters and Dave Lombardo's a brilliant drummer. The metal world will certainly miss them.

They were singularly influential when it came to all the extreme metal sub-genres, but I tend to prefer both their contemporaries and many of the bands they inspired.
