Add me to that list. I'll be the first to admit I didn't know her before nor had seen anything else in which she played but in many articles she is presented as a the best of her generation or a rare case. If she is that great, why wasn't she a forefront name or A-lister before that? Why didn't the magazines and newspaper talked about her rise to stardom before that? Add me to that list too I do know (of) her and never really liked her presence in movies TILL I saw "20th Century Women". She was really great in that and not her typical (nyc hipsterish aka super self involved and annoying) self. Which I really appreciated. She is a really good actress, and apparently a very good writer too. Although I dont relate to the women she writes or to the genre, I do see she is very talented. but to nominate her as best director, thats such a mystery how that happened. As much as it pains me to say it, it seems the gender played a role in it. Plus she is very well connected within the film making community. I thought about Lady Bird a lot and why it is so prominent this Oscar season. Such a small movie "about nothing". And I am still not sure. I wouldnt rate it as low as you had, but not much more than 6/10. Totally comparable to any other decent coming of age movie. That's the shortest and easiest way to explain why nobody understands the hype.

So should they NOT nominate women or blacks because, to some of you, they're only doing it to be PC or because of being under pressure? And if that's the case, when will a woman or black ever win?

and over Martin McDonagh. Thats a real snub. It just doesnt make any sense to me. But then again same with Greta Gerwigs charming little movie. What directing qualities were shown there that made her skills more special than Martin McDonagh?? Nice that Gerwig received a nom, but you can't tell me her film is that skillfully directed, that it has an unmistakable stamp of a genuine auteur and will leave an indelible imprint on the history of cinema. Could she have directed McDonagh's film or Spielberg's with the same outstanding results? I'm sure they could have directed her film in their sleep. I agree about Lady Bird. What was so special about the direction? ? It is just a camera following people around talking. If it wasnt for the METOO movement happening she would have NEVER GOT A NOMINATION.

No they shouldnt if it is only to be PC. A Woman or black should only win when the QUALITY OF THE WORK MERITS A WIN. Should have nothing to do with race or gender.

The way the nominations are decided is so complicated, I only understand part of it. But what is certain, is that each nominating member puts forth 5 nominatins, in their order of preference, not just 1, as many might think.
After that, the mathematics of percentages and numbers lose me. So it could be entirely possible that an unlikely candidate could qualify and sneak through with an actual nomination.
Many voters might be tired of nominating the same candidates every year, and might seek to recognize a fresh face, who signifies the future of film.

The Oscars have always been a joke. King Kong should have won best picture in 1933.
