Can Newcastle do a Wigan or WBA or Newport and upset the odds again today? There are rumours of discord between Conte and Abromavich behind the scenes at the Bridge with Conte saying that CFC's track record with managers is hardly stable, and my feeling is that he will not be in charge come next season. Toon saw off Luton in the third round but their league form is less than impressive and progression to the fifth round would do their confidence no harm at all.

A disjointed CFC in the first fifteen minutes as they try to contend with Newcastle's quite good passing of the ball. Out of the two the visitors look more likely to score first and have certainly not come here to make up the numbers despite what the FA Cup naysayers might think. As a game it is not getting me going yet. In all honesty I've seen more exciting chess openings.

The game's first shot on target comes on '26 as Jonjo Shelvey stoops to connect his head to the cross in and forces a close range parry from the Chelsea keeper. The 2000 Toon fans here will be encouraged so far.

Pedro's long ball on the half-hour picked out Hazard in the box who tapped it to Alonso who spotted Batshayi to his right and laid on the short ball. Batshuayi made no mistake in putting it away.

Pedro again initiates the goal. He collects it in his own half on '43 and once again it ends up, via Hazard, with Batshayi whose shot on goal is deflected off Lascelles and drifts high through the air into the Newcastle goal. It was a touch cruel on the visitors who are really showing me something here. Jonjo Shelvey - playing like a man possessed - might have potted at least two but for some decent goalkeeping from Caballero.

It's as quiet as the Brompton Oratory at Stamford Bridge for these opening ten minutes of the 2nd half. Pedro fired one over a few minutes ago but the game has dropped, the tempo has dropped and the crowd noise has dropped. So, it seems, have Newcastle's chins. But now a great volley from Alonso inside the box from Zappacosta's ball in. It took a deflection and Darlow did well to parry. The game needs a lift from somewhere if we are to get any further entertainment value out of it.

Just going through the motions now, both of them. We may see another pot but we shan't hold our breaths. Gayle's gone off for Newcastle. Not much he could do without proper support up front. Benitez has a matter of days to sign a striker, which he needs to on this evidence. CFC loanee Kenedy will help but you can't help but wonder why there's been no serious transfer movement from Newcastle. Ah we have a third goal on '72 as Alonso fires his 25 yard free kick into the roof of the Toon net. It curled majestically as it left his left boot and sailed and dipped clean over the wall, as agile and heat-seeking as a seagull swooping down for someone's chips on Brighton Pier.

It's all over here, thank goodness. Job done and all that. Alonso's free-kick the highlight. Newcastle lost all fight once the second goal went in and played the second half like they were attending their own funeral. A good turnout by Batshuayi who received the Man of the Match award.

Boring game.
Hopefully Cardiff will beat City. Or at least make a game of it.
