I keep getting recommended movies by friends and peers and it's frustrating how much I dislike what people nowadays consider "good" horror.
Babadook, It Follows, and The VVitch are the best examples. It's not so much that I can't sit through it or that I don't like atmosphere or character development. But I feel like these type of movies are pretentious. They go the slow burn route only to just *barely* deliver on its climax.

Not sure what you expected out of Witch... it's a pretty gruesome movie to claim it doesn't have much of a payoff. What exactly do YOU consider a good modern horror film?

Regarding The VVitch, I had real problems with understanding what they were saying. Scenes where they sat and talked ran too long. I feel like 15-20 could have been trimmed off the film and it wouldn't hurt the plot at all. And then there was the supernatural element. There was a lot of back and forth whether there were even any witches at all---obviously there were. Some stuff was also left unexplained. I didn't find the film scary at all. Loud overwhelming music isn't scary. The rest of the "scary parts" didn't really do anything for me, as I couldn't get invested in the movie and the characters.
Idk, I try not to overthink things with movies. I go in with no real expectations and try to enjoy it for what it is. At the end, it comes down to asking myself "did I enjoy this movie?". I did not enjoy it. My companion at the theater was actually upset with me that I took her. And one patron fell asleep halfway through the movie.
I really enjoyed The Conjuring films although I have minor problems with them (I did not like Annabelle). Which is odd considering I don't find James Wan's other films interesting at all. I loathe Insidious and I thought Dead Silence was mediocre at best. I did enjoy the first two Paranormal Activity films, the rest were average to terrible. When I go see horror films I just want to be entertained and engrossed in what's going on. People may disagree but I liked Lights Out and The Boy. Another recent one I was surprised to enjoy was Ouija 2. The first Ouija is one the worst films I ever saw in theaters but the sequel did everything right. I got really sucked in. On Netflix there's a film called We Are Still Here and I enjoyed that one a lot.

I hate the conjuring movie personally. Highly overrated "jump scare" movie that bored me, and offended me with its portrayal of Ed and Lorraine Warren as heroic figures when in reality they were con artists that exploited the mentally ill.

I love the 'long anticipated' payoff of being creeped out beyond belief.

I haven't seen It follows, but I really enjoyed the other two movies you mentioned. Slow horror isn't everyones taste - but I really like it. But I like faster paced, more brutal or action heavy films as well.
Maybe these movies are simply not for you and you might have more fun with more direct horror movies like Saw, The Collector or things like that.

I enjoy slow horror. All the classics engaged in it in some form. They build up the tension. That makes for more terror. Instead of a bunch of jump scares spread out over several minutes each, slow burn keeps the tension up throughout most of the movie.
I'm not saying one is better. I also enjoy jump scare horror. It's more fun.

You want stupid horror? Try the ridiculous "XX". Total embarrassment with only the first story having any inkling toward being "interesting".
