I think someone is insane to rate it below a 10. It's pretty much a perfect film.

Such a great movie despite the bleak and somewhat ironic subject matter. I saw it on TV when I was a kid and didn't get why it was so acclaimed. It actually has to be seen more than once even as an adult to connect everything while you're watching. Probably the best modern noir with few if any sympathetic main characters. Wife beating Curly is one of the nicer guys in the movie. Hell when is Burt Young one of the nicer guys in any movie?
10/10 Did the pedo Polanski thread make you think about Chinatown? Oddly enough I rewatched it a few nights ago for the first time in a few years. It never fails to impress and make me feel sad for that poor girl. Damn 1974 was a great year for movies. Not that I was around but holy shit.

And yeah, 1974 was killer. ‘Chinatown’ and ‘The Godfather’ in the same year not to mention many other genre defining films like ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ and ‘Blazing Saddles’

No love for "The Towering Inferno"? JK, haha It totally was robbed at the Oscars bro. How the hell was that nominated? All the old school actors maybe? When I was a kid I was a sucker for a lot of those Irwin Allen TV shows.

OJ would have eventually won an Oscar if he didn't, you know, kill 2 people and shit. Odd that I've seen more movies from the Best Picture list that year (all of them) as well as other categories than most recent years. I'm just not a big fan of "message" movies. Too heavy handed for my tastes usually.

8/10. I've only seen it once, and it felt like the kind of movie that has to be seen multiple times to fully appreciate it. I need to watch it again soon.

I give it a 9/10. There's actually an older thread on this, second page from the last.
