“The question I get asked by religious people all the time is, without God, what’s to stop me from raping all I want?
My answer is: I do rape all I want.
And the amount I want is zero. And I do murder all I want, and the amount I want is zero. The fact that these people think that if they didn’t have this person watching over them that they would go on killing,, raping rampages is the most self-damning thing I can imagine.”

The position for more of them is closer to, "God ingrained certain values into all of us, whether you believe in him or not."

He could be lying.

I’m not sure if you’re serious with your reply.

The issue of course being that it says much more about the theist than it does about the atheist. There are very few theists I know that avoid raping people simply because God™ has told them it is a bad idea.

Granted, there are some weird arguments for the existence of a god, especially from those who expect a god to take their side against the general masses on a daily basis. It's like the atheists who say there's no god because when they rode in a plane through the clouds there were no old men with long white hair and beards up there. ![](https://s26.postimg.org/tek3suwt5/laugh.gif)

But it is normally phrased in such a way as to imply the Atheist has no moral compass, which sure is very misguided, but I think that is the point.

Without wishing to be a smarty pants Debbie Downer too much, ![](https://s26.postimg.org/vdndyf3x5/winkgrin.gif) this thread is an incarnation (pun intended) of the eternal question of the objective vs subjective morality and whether a higher power is involved/required. The OP is pointing out to the theists that a high power is not necessarily required for an individual to have a similar level of 'moral standards' to those which theists often espouse.

Definitely the mindset of those who say God is needed for it. ![(Apple) Thinking Face](https://s26.postimg.org/aaklqi6k9/apple_thinking-face_1f914.png) Although sooo many godly keep getting busted. Schoolgirl

“The question I get asked by religious people all the time is, without God, what’s to stop me from raping all I want? This one puzzles me because even if you grant the idea that god stops people from raping who would otherwise rape... so what? Is the implication here that we should all subscribe to a belief just because it prevents harm? Regardless of whether it's actually true or not?
