role and would have been TERRIBLE!
Sandra Burnhard was supposed to play Janine Melnitz in Ghost Busters. She would have single handedly made the entire franchise unwatchable.
Eric Stoltz (you mean that Rocky Dennis kid from Mask?) as Marty McFly in Back to the Future. (Who is Eric Stoltz???)

Eric Stoltz was available. But he was replaced with Michael J. Fox. They startet shooting the movie with Eric Stoltz. But found that he was wrong for the role and manage to make it so Michael J. Fox could do both Family Ties and Back To The Future. They shoot for 5 weeks with Eric Stoltz before they got Michael J. Fox

Jim Broadbent was the first choice for Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses. Thank God that never happened.

I'm curious how well Peter Sellers would have played Major Kong in Dr Strangelove, but I doubt even he could have topped Slim Pickens.

The role for which I remember Stoltz the most was Keith Nelson in Some Kind of Wonderful (the boy-centered version of Pretty in Pink) www.imdb.com/title/tt0094006/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_96Still he was with some famous people at times: As for Back to the Future, seems like they wanted someone with a specific look (not saying Michael J Fox had nothing else to offer as an actor but he has some similar features):

Jim Broadbent was the first choice for Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses. Thank God that never happened. In my experience Jim Broadbent has masterfully pulled off every role he has played. I'm very pleased with David Jason as Del Boy, and now it is hard to envision anybody else playing the role, but is it possible that we would now be saying the same thing about Broadbent if he had played the part?

Jack Nicholson as Michael Corleone. The original choice of the studio was Robert Redford, actually, but Coppola always wanted Pacino. Nicholson I guess was a compromise, and I could see him working in the role (not as well as Pacino, though), but he turned down thinking he was wrong for the part. Speaking of Redford, he was also the studio's choice for The Graduate, which would be all kinds of wrong.

I remember seeing a special about "The Godfather" and Pacino said he wanted to play Sonny (I could have seen that) while the studio wanted James Caan to play Michael (I COULDN'T see that).

Not "thank God" moments at all, but I wonder about Brando as Lawrence of Arabia and Tuesday Weld as Bonnie Parker.
Not sure Brando could have conveyed the frailty and doubt as well as O'Toole did. Not sure Weld could have conveyed the dangerous sexuality that Dunaway did.

Dougray Scott was delayed making Mission Impossible 2 so Hugh Jackman was given the Logan role in X-MEN.

Coppola once said that the Gulf Western suits (owners of Paramount at the time) suggested John Wayne as Don Vito and Robert Redford and Ryan O'Neal as two of the sons. Happily, they didn't press him. Gulf Western in the sixties was developing out of an auto parts/metallurgy business to a conglomerate. Evans, Paramount exec at the time, jokes about the GW management in The Kid Stays in the Picture.
