John Wayne turned down the role of Patton, reportedly because he objected to the slapping scene. He would have made the film rather cartoonish.

De Niro also tried to play Sonny, he even auditioned, but he was pretty bad at it. Coppola once said that the Gulf Western suits (owners of Paramount at the time) suggested John Wayne as Don Vito and Robert Redford and Ryan O'Neal as two of the sons. Happily, they didn't press him. Gulf Western in the sixties was developing out of an auto parts/metallurgy business to a conglomerate. Evans, Paramount exec at the time, jokes about the GW management in The Kid Stays in the Picture. How do you think it would have turned out if they had stuck with Sir Laurence Olivier as Vito?

Good question. Not sure I have a good answer though. Brando plays Vito as distant and calculating. Olivier tended to be more dynamic.

In my experience Jim Broadbent has masterfully pulled off every role he has played. I'm very pleased with David Jason as Del Boy, and now it is hard to envision anybody else playing the role, but is it possible that we would now be saying the same thing about Broadbent if he had played the part? Something we'll never know. You can say that about many roles. Indeed. For decades I think many have said that in terms of casting "Gone With the Wind" that they cannot imagine anybody other than Clark Gable or Vivian Leigh in the two leading parts. They both were excellent, but I think a couple of others considered may have done very well, to the point that they would have been accepted very positively. Errol Flynn would have made an interesting Rhett Butler and either Paulette Goddard or Susan Hayward a memorable Scarlett O'Hara.

role and would have been TERRIBLE! Sandra Burnhard was supposed to play Janine Melnitz in Ghost Busters. She would have single handedly made the entire franchise unwatchable. Eric Stoltz (you mean that Rocky Dennis kid from Mask?) as Marty McFly in Back to the Future. (Who is Eric Stoltz???) Corey Haim wanted the role of Robin in Batman Forever, but, Chris O'Donnell got the role. (And the reason why it is a "Thank God" he didn't get it, is because although Batman Forever was pretty good, & the character or Robin was done really well in it, we all know what a disaster the following movie , Batman & Robin was, & how awful Robin was portrayed in that one.)

While yes, Chris O'Donnell did a pretty good job in the first one, the second one he was horrible in it (because of how the character was portrayed in that awful movie). I also believe that Corey Haim would have been good as Robin too, in Batman Forever, but, Batman & Robin would have been an embarrassment for him, just like it was for Chris O'Donnell.

Christina Ricci as Enid in Ghost World. Thora Birch is perfect in the role.

Ronald Reagan as Rick Blaine in Casablanca. Hard to imagine anybody other than Bogart in that role, and impossible to imagine Ray-Gun. He'd have been awful. The very thought of it seems so much like a joke you'd almost think the story was apocryphal, but he really was one of the original casting choices.
