There's nothing not to like about this show. Really got into it.

I read the book about a decade ago and really liked it. Luckily I read so much I don't remember who the killer was. I'm liking the show but man it's kind of tough to watch with the oozing syphilis sores sociopaths, the butchered children, cross dressing kid prostitutes and the like. Also Rudy Roosevelt Gamgee. ![](https://s26.postimg.org/xxn5mvzx5/hairrise.gif)

The sets are great and I think is accurately depicts what it was like in that time period. For example treatment of women in the workplace. When the police chief exposed himself to his secretary is a shining example of that. I'll keep watching hoping that the show continues to tweak my emotions like great shows do. Of course, I must find out who the killer is too.

Surprised it's not being talked about that much. I think it's okay, but the acting is weak, in my opinion.

I also agree with the above poster, that the ripped out eyeballs and stuff can make it rather difficult to watch, and I could do without the sex scenes (esp. with the one brother- I don't like him as a character, so it's difficult to get invested in his romance, and I'd generally prefer more screentime on Lucius. But I get why they are doing it, they want it to be gritty and they want to put you where John Moore is, on it being so disturbing, shocking, gritty, and ugly that you want to turn away yet you find yourself staring straight ahead into it.
I liked PENNY DREADFUL, SHERLOCK, and 11th HOUR show (circa 2008, starring Rufus Sewell), and this fills the void very nicely. And I find that most of the characters are really interesting. I'm also a sucker for anything that involves Teddy R. and/or 18th/19th-century views on psychology/psychiatry/sociology type fields and also medicine in general. Plus, this really does feel like you're getting a social-history lesson, seeing the stuff like the guy getting his teeth done and his joke, "A night with Venus, a lifetime with Mercury", the way Sara's single-status is viewed, the ways the different police/reporters/etc. refer to the victims of the string of murders, and how the city was divided up. And I love that you really need to sit down and watch it, this isn't mindless entertainment.

"Pretty good" sounds about right. Granted I haven't been able to give it a proper watch yet. I watched most of the premiere episode when it first aired and then last night watched episode two and about half of three. It seems well-written with some interesting ideas. Nothing has fully drawn me in yet, though.
