His inability to understand character and story?
Constantly bludgeoning us with noise and calling it a movie?
A complete lack of coherence to action scenes?

He's a paradox. I think he does have talent when it comes to action and it does show up in some of his movies (The Rock, Pearl Harbor, Transformers 1). Yet it seems he committed himself to this infamous 'style' of his because it makes so much money most of the time.

I don't hate him as much as many others do, but I believe he just simply doesn't care about the content he's basing off of in his movies (ie Transformers, horror remakes, TMNT).

I'm pretty sure that if he was given a good script and was forced to actually try, he could make a really fun and very good movie.

He's isn't "terrible". He's no Ed Wood, Coleman Francis or Ray Dennis Steckler. But he's not interesting. He churns out his formulaic films that the people love and make gobs of money. But he doesn't get any of my money.

I love The Rock (imo its a legit awesome action film that hit all the right notes) but other than that? Yeah , I think he is pretty terrible.

All the above. Bay is a great camera man who needs to be taking orders from a good director. That way his abilities could be put to use.

Because he's got the brains of a pyromaniacal fratboy and the means to act out his fetishes on theater screens.
I actually really liked Pain and Gain. His style was so suited to that movie that it almost felt self-parodying.

The Rock and Bad Boys show that is he capable of making good movies when he holds himself in check and is working with a solid script (as long as he stays to the kind of movie he is good at), but after Armageddon and Pearl Harbor he is allowed complete creative freedom and that was a huge mistake. He also cares much more about money than making good movies.
I should also point out that his one attempt at a mature film (13 Hours) is a complete failure because he has no talent for realism or authentic drama.

Personally I love Michael Bay, both as a director and a producer.

As just pure entertainment I have to admit that The Rock, Bad Boys, Armageddon, and even Pearl Harbor were plenty engaging. If Pearl Harbor had been made between 1942 - 1944 it would have probably seen the largest concentration of enlistees to the armed services of any movie made during war time!
But behind all of the explosions and one liners, there isn't a lot of substance unfortunately. I have to agree that Bay would be amazing cinematographer for the right director. I won't even mention the Transformers films.

I really only think he’s been terrible since the Transformers movies. Before that I enjoy his work.

Doesn't care about actors or stories or coherent cinematography.
The Rock was his only normal film and I assume it was because he didnt have much say in decisions.

Because he doesn't care about the things audiences want, he only cares about what he wants & most importantly what he thinks we want.

First three Transformers movies are great, especially the third one--They've all made a ton of money--You want a good story, go watch Wuthering Heights

He's not as bad as he's made out to be because at the end of the day he's got some movies I like...
1.Bad Boys (1995) - 6-6.5/10 (within my Top 235 movies) 2.Bad Boys II (2003) - 6/10 3.Transformers (2007)
I used to think Armageddon was a pretty strong movie for years until a viewing on June 15th 2014 and now I no longer like it overall.
but with that said... basically it does not really matter what anyone things because as long as he continues to make boatloads of $$$ with Transformers series I doubt anyone in that industry is going to dis him because it's all about the $$$ at the end of the day for most people in the movie business it seems. like a good portion of the better movies out there, at least in my mind, tend to be ones without a huge budget. sure, there are some high budget movies that stand out here and there but tend to be less then the smaller-to-moderate range budget movies where it's more of the directors passion than them just getting any random director and tying them to movie that's nearly guaranteed not to fail like a super hero movie you can take any semi-competent director and they will still make plenty of $$$.
NOTE: I have not seen Transformers since Aug 17th 2012 though. I really need to get around to re-watching this just to make sure I still like it. I don't like any of the other movies of the series though because while some are worse than others, they are usually okay enough to have seen once but have no re-watch appeal which is what ultimately makes or breaks a movie for me. come to think of it... I might go watch that just to see if it still holds up or not as this will make for my 3rd viewing of it.
