The narration in NOTES ON A SCANDAL is distracting and unnecessary. The first 2/3 show us an unoriginal and predictable but not boring story about infidelity. The last 1/3 introduces another conflict and it becomes a psychological thriller. It's deep but, during this part, Cate Blanchett, Bill Nighy, Juno Temple and Michael Maloney start to over-act. The only things that are good from beginning to end are Judi Dench's performance and Philip Glass' music score. 5/10 ------------------------------------- You can read comments of other movies in my blog (in English, in Spanish or in Italian).

It's among my favorite films. One of the aspects I like is that it demonstrates a universal truth. I think we are all judgemental of others in our minds, but we usually keep those criticisms to ourselves. Barbara (Dench) is an extreme example of that. The narration is vital because it allows us to see the conniving, manipulative nature of her mind and it's shocking in its harshness. It helps color in the outline of her villainry.

I think both Dench and Nighy are superb in this, possibly their finest work. Blanchett is miscast but it's still a highly entertaining film, and as noted Philip Glass's score is wonderful. 7/10.

It is a fine, possibly great, film. I don't even remember it having narration, so it must not have bothered me. I go with what others have already said, Dame Judi's amazing performance and the Glass underscore are really outstanding.
