Yes. The best writers were from then. I've stopped reading a lot of fantasy anymore. It's just not as good.

Are covers important? Yes, but the blurb is usually what pulls me in to reading it. However, a few years ago I discovered that 2 boxes of my books had gone missing. I've been trying to replace them with copies that have the same covers. Those covers were familiar friends and I want to see them again.

Not anymore. Many winters ago, I thought Twilight had the coolest cover, and I saw the word vampires when I flipped through it. I expected something like Buffy.
Never again. I make sure I read the first few pages, a chunk in the middle, and a chunk near the end.

They definitely get your attention and make you take notice, I think that's the largest appeal of R.L. Stine's Fear Street series, the stories themselves are mediocre at best, but the covers will draw you in. But I think once you read the book, then the cover matters very much if you decide to own a copy.

Sometimes the covers can make one curious enough to try out a new or old book.

Sometimes the covers can make one curious enough to try out a new or old book. I know that's right. Even though they say don't judge a book by its cover, we still do, if the picture looks interesting then we think it must be worth checking out.

The worst thing that happened to me was the big trend in Used book stores and Music Stores years ago. All those endless great books and records that I traded up just to read or listen to something new, so many classics now in someone else's clutches, I can sympathize.

For the amount of Global sales Harry Potter has garnered, What is up with those fairly lousy Book Covers? Are they kitch, not really- Finally they are doing some pretty good things with them. My Absolute Favorite Harry Potter cover. Seriously browsed through way too many Romance covers that I know two things, apparently one does not tamper with success and never do this on an empty stomach-LOL. Luckily I did find the Goth-Romance subgenre and hit pay dirt. The caption on this Book cover is great, Think there is only one copy left on Amazon, fight for it. Eye-grabbing, And totally lends a Gothic element to the stories that you are going to read. Dense and intense reading but well worth it for those who make the journey.

I've never read a "Queen Size Gothic" before but look at the price! $1.50!! I remember when books were that price and lower. Haven't ever read Mervyn Peake but they look interesting. Am I missing out?

Am I missing out? Huge Influence on other fantasy writers, There is a Gormenghast (TV Mini-Series 2000) if you don't want to commit to the books. The books click with some people (wonderfully) and other's find the characters a bit strange and the characters too weird for their tastes. One of those series that you probably just read once to experience something different, been a long-time, hope someone who has recently read them, fills this opinion in properly.

I like strange and weird. I will see if I can find them. I read a little about Mervyn Peake and it sounds as if he had an interesting life.

Only natural to be drawn in by them, so yes. Kinda. Something along the lines of picking up a book you never thought of before. Still the story needs to pull me in before I commit to it.

My Absolute Favorite Harry Potter cover. Excellent choice. I know I've downloaded many covers from foreign editions of the Potter stories.

I was wondering, what is the absolute minimal cover design that would attract the reader? This cover is just about perfect, simple, atmospheric and complex- strange as the book. Game of Throne book covers seem mostly to be going for a minimalist approach overall and this is eye-grabbing and has that cool medieval banner feel. Colorful and Bold with two weary riders, wondering where they are heading to?

I have read Ursula Le Guin and Zane Grey. I have read some short stories by George R. R. Martin but not Game of Thrones. (I haven't even watched it) I would read all of them but The Left Hand of Darkness would be more appealing to me.

Hmmmm....I was also eyeing Left-Hand of Darkness, wonder if it is really good or just has a reputation? for being radical at the time. Should give it a chance out of curiosity- (the book not the gender-swapping silly

I have decided to do an interesting experiment for the year, I will judge the book by it's cover and only buy books for their covers. As my current success from critics and personal taste has been about 50/50. The first purchase is from the fascinating cover of an H.P Lovecraft book, the one I decided to buy is a bit better. The Colour Out of Space: Tales of Cosmic Horror by Lovecraft, Blackwood, Machen, Poe, and Other Masters of the Weird. This new collection features some of the greatest masters of extreme terror. Edgar Allan Poe, "MS. Found in a Bottle" Bram Stoker, "The Squaw" Ambrose Bierce, "Moxon's Master" Ambrose Bierce, "The Damned Thing" Ambrose Bierce, "An Inhabitant of Carcosa" R. W. Chambers, "The Repairer of Reputations" M. P. Shiel, "The House of Sounds" Arthur Machen, "The White People" Algernon Blackwood, "The Willows" Henry James, "The Jolly Corner" Walter de la Mare, "Seaton's Aunt" H. P. Lovecraft, "The Colour Out of Space"
