I think it might take the cake for the most annoying music. The dubbing is horrible and the subs dont match the dubbing. Seriously the 1st hr is rather lame. Last 30 mins kinda makes up for it not enough to get more than a 5/10 from me.

I watched it for the first time a couple months back. Not the dubbed version though. Thought it was sound and it was interesting to see why it made it on the notorious video nasty list. It's those two sequences that people think of, when this film is mentioned. I agree it might be a little ponderous, have odd music choices and the characters are fairly bland. However I can't fault its dread-induced atmospherics, polished camerawork bringing out the vivid local colour and George Eastman's performance as the title character is truly disturbing.

I absolutely love Antropophagus or Anthropophagus or however the Hell it's spelled...really, it would've been much easier to just call the damn film Cannibal since that's essentially what the word means. Anyway, it's one of my favorite Pasta Land horrors from that veritable Golden Age of Italian Horror Films i.e., 1979-1981. Don't ask me why but I love the film's slow pace, weird music, cheesy effects (the head in the bucket is pretty bad, I must admit), drippy characters, and silly dialog. And besides all that stuff, there's some really great creepy atmosphere and scares galore once our protagonists get to the nearly deserted island. The scene in the bedroom when we first get a glimpse of the deformed killer is truly frightening as is the scene with the blind girl jumping out from the wine vat. George Eastman does a good job playing the killer whose transformation from a loving husband into a deformed freak is never clearly explained. Kudos to director Joe D'Amato who managed to create a horror film that effectively combines Gothic horror with a modern slasher movie formula. Fun fact: The mansion where the killer's sister hangs herself (another great scene) and Tisa and the blind girl hide from the killer was the same building used in the terrorist siege scene in Hell of the Living Dead. BTW, Zora Kerova looks amazingly sexy in red. I like her character in this film much more than the bimbo she played in Cannibal Ferox . Anything with Zora in it is a must-see for me! The Shriek Show DVD is the best print I've seen of this film. 8/10 "OK, screw the grated cheese. I'll just eat it as is!" Zora Kerova sees trouble in the cards while Tisa Farrow is having a Zombie flashback - she's on yet another boat with a bunch of Italians headed for a mysterious island..."been there, done that!"

I think it's wonderful. So creepy and atmospheric. Best watched late night in complete darkness with the volume up high.

There's a pretty good sequel, 'Absurd' (1981).
