Is it perfect? I would say no--I think from an FX perspective the film peaks with the Norris-Thing and never matches it. But the suspense of the situation is so creepy, watching it dozens of times doesn't mute my enthusiasm.
After so many years of a super dark VHS and DVD copy I was finally able to make out the Blair-Thing more clearly--watching it in the original VHS all one could see is a weird dog head.
Also, one scene I actually like a lot is a deleted scene. Where ennings I think, encounters someone in a parka shuffling off down a corridor. I think the film could have used a few more moments like that.
Carpenter let Bottin do what he wanted--and much of it is great, but I think the FX did hijack the story in some ways.
