Another all-time John Carpenter classic. Some of the best practical special effects ever put on film.

It's incredible what they were able to construct and put to film with the alien creature.

While it's not my #1, it is my #5. It's a perfect movie that somehow gets better and better with every viewing.

It's amazing.
I remember being like 9 or 10 or 11, something like that, it being roughly 2am and then the movie starts; it was the only horror movie at the time to frighten me, maybe simply because how visually grotesque the creature was, but i was enamored with it.

The opening is brilliant and most of the rest of the movie is quite good but the stuff with Wilford Brimley in the last act gets a bit too silly for me and doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. I find it hard to believe that everything the Thing needs to build a spacecraft is available on that base and it feels like Carpenter didn't really know what to do with the story at that point. The very ending with Russell and Keith is good though.
The best thing about the movie are the themes of trust and secrets though. How we never really know what is inside another human being and that can be very scary.
7.5/10
The prequel is an abomination though and completely misses the point of why the original is as good as it is.

I thought this was a horrible movie, filled with grotesque special effects, the whole movie wanted me to puke...
.and then I heard that some say it's a great movie, and one should't compare it with the old movie. I'm OK with that
So I re-watched it, I still don't like it.
How could such idiots even have been considered for an Antarctia station...Roller skates Oh heavens

It's not everyone's cup of tea nor are Carpenter's works as a whole. However, I'm not sure I would call them idiots and I'm made curious by that statement. They do make some idiotic decisions out of panic at points but given the nature of the threat that's totally understandable. For the most part, they try to solve the problem with logic and reason. What do you think they should have done?

What do you think they should have done? Thanks for your answer! Calling them idiots now would have been too harsh, it was a reflection of my first viewing, and maybe a sloppy explanation. My initial thoughts was that it prefered gore more than a solid storyline, and the special effects are very good for 1982, I give them that, 5/10 It happens from time to time that a movie that everyone likes and get high scores, but one day you too will wonder what all that fuss was about, Not this movie but some other time...

Oh, trust me, that day has come and gone. One film that stands out in my mind is Ratatouille which I thought was just alright but seemingly everyone else raved over. Sometimes a film just doesn't click with you. Out of curiosity, do you still think it more about gore than story?

Definitely one of the best remakes. Not a remake Yep it's a remake. John Carpenter even confirmed it.
