Made over $600 million on $150 million budget. Seemed like there was talk of making a sequel, but...nothing.

It seemed like the people involved liked the idea of a sequel, but no one really knew where to take the story and characters, which is why no one actually wrote a script.

It fell into development hell. It took years to get made, and by the time they even considered filming a sequel, nobody cared. Happens to a lot of proposed / planned sequels.
