I think what Paramount is doing is brilliant. why waste money when you know you have a dud. and the consumer are winning all the way. my Netfix subscription is $1 a month

I thought it was passable as a sub-par episode of Black Mirror. I do like what they're doing with Cloverfield as a franchise by telling different stories almost like an anthology series, like Halloween was originally meant to be before they chickened out and chose to focus solely on Micheal Myers. I respect that they are willing to take risks and not play it safe with their brand. I just wish the movie was better. Despite the risks they take with the franchise, the movie itself plays it safe by using trite genre conventions and ends up being a predictable mishmash of other films and shows (The Thing, Black Mirror, Alien, Event Horizon, hell, even 12 to the Moon). There's nothing wrong with cliche or homage but the film doesn't feel like it has its own identity and has instead stitched together one from other works and is wearing it as a ghoulish mask. The story isn't bad much in the same way trail-mix isn't bad but it likewise leaves you feeling bloated and a bit empty emotionally by the end. It also could have done without the completely needless scenes with the husband that were only there to tie it in to Cloverfield.
I thought the concept could be a lot of fun-- astronauts from different countries having to work together for a common cause-- and I was completely on board when they foreshadowed demons but unfortunately none of it pays off by the end. There's not much focus on the tension between crew members due to their cultural and ideological differences and that seemed like a missed opportunity. It would have added some sorely-needed depth to the otherwise shallow characters. It's there, sure, but it's hardly explored and ultimately doesn't amount to anything. And no demons. Boo. Unless you count the Cloverfield monster that is in the film for 2 seconds because I guess it has a contractual obligation.
The acting was passable but there was this odd lack of chemistry between the actors (with the exception of a couple of interactions between the German character and the Chinese character) and it felt sterile. It's not that it was bad acting (mostly); it's just that the pieces didn't quite fit together. And man, the actor playing the comic relief did not have the presence or timing to pull it off and his quips ended up being cringy. I actually felt sorry for the man.
And it looks cheap, not in the way a low-budget film does, but in the way a TV series does and while that's not a deal-breaker for me, it does take away the charm it might have had with more creative cinematography and a less 'clean' look. As it is, it's just acceptable.
Overall, meh. I didn't hate it or come away disappointed (as I had no prior expectations) but if there's another dimension where another version of myself never watched it, he's not missing anything.

I thought it was pretty good. I think it would have been better on the big screen though. I just hope they don't continue to go straight to Netflix. Does anyone think we'll see this on Blu-ray?

I'm not sure I even want to see it if it isn't even as good as 'Life.'

Like the bastard stepchild of last years superior LIFE. Lmao. I like it. Life was not really a great movie. It was very average. Now the Cloverfield Paradox basically ripped the movie off. I kept thinking I saw the movie before, but couldn't think of where. And yeah, it's just a cheaper version of the movie LIFE.

I didn't see Life. It reminded me more of Sunshine, with a little bit of The Mist.
Anyway, gotta agree with the consensus here and give it a 5.

I too like the franchise, but this latest edition was somewhat disappointing. I thought the acting was good, as were the special effects. Where it failed was in the script. You had people doing illogical things. For instance, why did Ava need to go in person to the other Earth, when all she had to do was tell her friend to warn the other Ava. It made no sense.
I agree with you about the guy and the 'humour' - there wasn't any. Overall, though I thought it was okay, I expected a lot more. I just hope they never bring back the scriptwriters again.

Well, that one isn't a flaw in the script. She wasn't going back to warn the other Ava; she wanted to go to the alternate Earth because her kids were still alive there. I don't know what she planned to do as a doppleganger as I doubt the other her would be alright with a duplicate that is obsessed with her children moping around outside the house. I don't think it would end well for anybody involved. However, while that is an illogical decision for the character to make, it makes sense in the context of the film because she is thinking emotionally and not rationally; and the film does address the flaw in her thinking during dialogue with... whatever that lady's name was... the one tried to kill everyone at the end, which she discounts. I agree with you overall, though. It wasn't a horrible film but it didn't do anything memorable and I doubt I'll remember anything about it in a few weeks.

8/10. Yet another movie that is much better than the critics seems to say. Critics don't seem to like Netflix movies at all. So take what they say with a grain of salt. That's not really true. I've seen both Gerald's Game in 1922, both of which have good reviews. Plus, if you look at this list you will see that several of them have good scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

I sorta have the same reaction I did after seeing 10 Cloverfield Lane. I still have to assume Rob and Elizabeth are buried underneath the rubble in (the place formerly known as) Central Park.

I thought it was a flaw because it seemed more like a deus ex machina to have Ava want to go to the alternate Earth, so she wouldn't be killed by what's her name, and therefore is able to rescue the mission successfully.
