"There's something going on here that I really don't understand, but I like it."
Anne Benton (Jodie Foster) becomes unwillingly involved with a ruthless gang of mobsters when she witnesses a murder taking place, but going to the police is only gonna do things worse as the powerful kingpin don Lino Avoca (Vincent Price) wants her out of the picture and as soon as possible.
Hitman Milo (Dennis Hopper) is ordered in on the job, however this usually cold blooded individual are about to make things rather complicated when he ends up falling for his prey, and before the two lovers know what hit them, they are forced on the run from a small army of vengeful gangsters with a score to settle.
Ok, not a great film, I know but it is not that bad as some people say it is. I remember reading up on the old IMDb board that Joe Pesci would not have his named included in this film, since he hated every bit of it, or something like that. Anyway, I still gave it a try and ended up liking it.
Every time it have either been sent on TV or I have found either VHS or DVD copy of it, it goes by the title of Backtrack, however it seems like it also is known as Catchfire.
So, I decided to go with Backtrack, (cooler name or so I think).
The film is partly a crime-thriller but also bit of an action/adventure with a theme which is not that unfamiliar to the romantic screwball comedies of the 80s, where a odd couple becomes head over heels involved with each other and they set out on a lively and dangerous road trip, with a bunch mishappenings and weird figures appears all over. The story and acting is a bit "wooden" or uneven, as it turns out that the film have not one but I think three different versions or maybe more.
Anyway, I enjoyed it for what it is and it is one that I thought would fit in the action-adventure section instead of the crime or horror, thriller and suspense boards.
Beside Dennis Hopper and Jodie Foster in the leads, the film has an impressive (for maybe not such an impressive film) list of familiar names and faces such as Joe Pesci, Vincent Price, Bob Dylan, John Turtorro, Fred Ward, Catherine Keener, Charlie Sheen and Toni Basil.
