There have been are a few groups over the decades which focused much of their music based on topics, rather than styles or "genres"...
"The Beach Boys" for example.
Much of their music is about "Surfing" and "Hot Rods".
While there may be an occasional song that is written today, that may focus on such topics... it seems to me, that they may be too few and too far between. (Am I wrong?)
If someone wanted to have a "Beach Party", these days... I can't imagine that there would be too many people that wouldn't pop in a "Beach Boys" album or two during the celebration...
Are groups, like: "The Beach Boys" from the 1950s & 1960s, just too "old" for the younger generations to even consider... even though groups like those were considered to be, the all time best, at music concerning such topics?
I used "Surfing" and "Hot Rods" for my example, but there may be other groups singing about other TOPICS that some of you can think of, that were sung about in days past, that are not being sung about these days...
Feel Free to comment on those too.
(Older Unique Groups VS Younger Generation)

There's a similar thread (not focused on The Beach Boys, though) on the Religion board right now. I'd say basically the same thing as there: to younger kids, old media (music, movies, etc.) will always seem old, dated, uncool, boring, and not worth their time; UNLESS those kids develop a real passion/appreciation for music and decide to explore older stuff. The Beach Boys were around 30+ years before I was born, but I love their stuff, especially the genius that is Pet Sounds. So for someone like me, yes, they're very much timeless.
While singing about surfing might've gone out with TBB, songs about cars didn't. Every era/genre has its car songs:

The Beach Boys are timeless, but I think the most timeless of all songs are ones that get played at sporting events ("YMCA", "We Will Rock You"/"We Are the Champions") or songs that get played at wedding receptions ("Celebration", "I Swear").
