A few good set pieces, like the trailer hanging over the cliff, but it's clear Spielberg's heart just isn't into this as the first film. I think a better movie could have been made if primarily about this guy -

Tembo? F^ck yeah, he deserved his own spin-off. Just him hunting big creatures and waxing philosophically.

I'm not sure it could have been a better movie no matter what. The special effects are amazing and it has some amazing scenes barely tied together.
However, it is not meant to be a particularly deep story.

I kinda secretly like it more than the first:
1. The good guys get eaten while it was predominately bad people who were snackables in the first movie.
2. Julianne Moore is my favorite actress, and that sequence with the RV is tense af!
3. Pete Postlethwaite!
4. Vince Vaughn was fresh from Swingers which made him a star.
5. There's 50% more dino action scenes than in the first movie.
6. Gone is all the "oooh and ahhh" of the first movie, and in its place is more tension and terror.
7. "Oh yeah. Oooh, ahhh, that's how it always starts. Then later there's running and um, screaming..."
8. Arliss Howard does a very good English accent.
9. The San Diego sequence is very cool if you're familiar with that city.
10. "Don't go into the long grass!"

The only thing i really disliked about it was the daughter tagging along. She wasn't as helpless as the kids in the first film but it just felt unnecessary.
That and the San Diego stuff kind of bored me. I was glad it's not that much of the film. The concept of dinosaurs in the city was part of the marketing too, if i remember correctly...but realy I just wanted to stay on the island. Much like King Kong, the island is where the fun is.

I hate the San Diego sequence. The movie falls apart for me at at that point and doesn't recover.

I agree completely.
The raptor attack is a cool scene too.

I actually really liked "THE LOST WORLD: JURASSIC PARK". It is My 2nd Favorite Movie in the Franchise! That isn't saying much. Jurassic Park III has a better story imo but it doesn't have as many good scenes as The Lost World and Jurassic World is a generic rehash of Jurassic Park.

I highly disagree that The Lost World is more tense or more frightening than Jurassic Park and the fact that there is more dino action actually hurts the movie imo. Jurassic Park is all about build up and that is the genius of the film. The Lost World lacks any suspense because it is all action.

I think Lost World is more suspenseful since it's really just a compilation of short stories with climactic moments masquerading as a whole movie.
But it takes more than suspense to make a great movie & nothing in it topped the T-Rex intro or the Raptor stalking in the first.

Jurassic Park 3 is better made as a basic adventure story but I like Lost World for the dino scenes. There is some really cool stuff in there like the round up sequence and the raptor attack which is wonderfully paced and supported by the soundtrack-until the gymnastics-which ruins it. I agree the girl is completely pointless to the film. Diversity casting at its worst. On the other hand she didnt irritate me like the two kids from the first movie.
The boat smashing into the docks with the slaughtered crew-didnt like that lack of explanation. They could have had a dialogue about it...lazy.
I also love the last scene with the baby shyly approaching Ludlow. There's a lot of black comedy in it--like the paleontologist being so scared of snakes that he gets killed by the t-rex. Or the Japanese people being chased in San Diego. And what was up with the posters in the video store? I spotted Schwarzenegger in a Shakespeare movie? I assume an injoke in reference to the Last Action Hero?
Spielberg was obviously sleepwalking when he made it but in a way I think it helped-because he was not going back to his sunny weather kind of film after Schindler's List, so here it is kind of a dark film (I think too dark-the San Diego scene should have had some sunlight).
But I liked the cynicism in the theme--the first movie was more about Grant and the kids and parenting-this one gave more emphasis on the dinos and exploitation.
Tembo is an interesting character. He definitely makes an impression right from his first appearance in the jeep.
Goldblum was funny, Vaughn was ok--since you assume he is one thing and then discover he is an Earth Firster.
The trailer attack went on a little too long--but the death of Eddie was memorable since he really got a horrible death right after a heroic act.
I hate Jurassic Park. It was designed around animatronics and thus feels too claustrophobic. Not enough full shot animation. A sick triceratops does not impress me.
Lots of scenes of Grant and the kids out in the jungle and we don't see anything-and we want to see things. Too much technobabble. And the kids irritated me-I wanted them to die. The logical storyline should have been opening day of the park with lots of tourists.

To me, Head & Shoulders above all the other Jurassic movies.
But that's just me.
Also, listening to Pink Floyd's 'Pigs'.
Big ending guitar break starting.

It's underrated and the first movie is overrated. I honestly like the 1997 movie more than the first one from 1993 as it's the only one of the series that's still amongst My Favorite Movies in general (which contains 186 movies). the first movie is not as all around enjoyable to watch as the 2nd one for me lately as I only mildly like that one.
6.5-7/10 ; which makes it within my Top 186 movies.
