I generally prefer the format here better, but the real resource of the IMDb boards was the individual title message boards and individual person message boards. That was a whole lot of information and a lot of history that they just wiped off the internet. Being able to check on any title, from an obscure movie I saw at a festival, to a small production I worked on, to whatever the new blockbuster was, to an old classic from the 20s or 30s, and seeing what people had said about it and finding more links and information that way was a great luxury. Sometimes you could have genuine discussions, sometimes you'd see how stupid the comments were, sometimes you could find info to help you write a paper, sometimes ypu could communicate With the filmmakers themselves, and sometimes you'd laugh at how only the director and his family members posted on the boards masquerading as real users and said it was a masterpiece.
The sports boars is still solid here, the horror board is less active, and the I Need to know and classics boards are shells of their former selves.
IMDb has been getting worse in general. They had stopped really supporting the boards before they closed them, and removed a lot of old threads at random. Now they have made it more and more difficult to look up and sort your ratings and changed the layout of their pages, and are favoring just linking photos and videos above an easy to reference informative page layout. And not just on the homepage, but on individual title and name pages. It's lame and transparent.
I still store my ratings there and look up names from time to time, but it used to be my most frequented website. It's not even close anymore.

I've written a few reviews, but pretty rarely go there. I think the biggest problem with the old boards was that they were over run by trolls. I don't mean on topic trolls like marco and AH, I mean complete asshats capable of only mean spirited valueless dtivel. Go to any actor/actresses board and it would be flooded with negativity. The individual movie boards are the biggest loss. Some great conversations there.

Some asshole making a blatantly flammable OP and then 15 other idiots getting self righteous with themselves and squabbling amongst themselves for page upon page of posts while the original poster never comments again. I lost count on how many got sent to my ignore list.

Yeah. I recently noticed you can't run a character search on IMDB anymore. Maybe it was a temporary glitch. To the OP- yes I do miss the IMDB boards. Especially the individual boards for actors/performers/writers/directors etc. The sports board had many more posters. I still don't know exactly why they were taken down. I think only Jeff Bezos, Col Needham and a handful of other people know what happened. IMDB removed the character search permanently. I remember seeing a notification about that on IMDB about a month ago.
Yes, that's what I miss most about the old IMDb boards - the individual boards for movies, TV shows, actors, actresses, etc.
"IMDB removed the character search permanently." Why? How does IMDB benefit by removing that feature?! I still don't know why they ended the message boards. I suspect it was partly because of spammers and trolls and partly political. No character search? I am no longer a member (I left when they ended the boards) but it seems like Bezos and Needham have let the site go. Perhaps one or both of them will be involved in replacing IMDB with a new site.

I think it has more to do with cost/benefit than anything else. I hope that they've lost traffic because of it, but I doubt that they have lost any meaningful traffic. Even as Needham was attempting to say this was all for the benefit of the users and he wanted the users to have a better experience etc., he was also explaining that even though the boards were highly trafficked that they couldn't really make a profit off of them because the ads were harder to target and they were unable get people to click on them, and also that the boards software was dated and there was a higher cost to maintain them than they wanted. It came down to money... what a shock. They hid behind the 'political' excuse because it was convenient and easy, and it worked like a charm. Anytime I saw an article about the boards or was a 'good riddance' or 'nobody is sorry to see them go' sort of nonsense headline that only focused on the annoyance of the politics board or inflammatory posts on some actress' page. With that excuse in hand it was easy to ditch the boards and cut that cost entirely rather than update them and improve them if they were actually in need of improvement. Same with the character pages. It couldn't have been that difficult to allow me to click on the character name of Hamlet, or Batman, or Hitler, or whoever and let me see all of the actors listed for that part. But of they could cut that cost entirely and not lose a lot of ad revenue then that's what they'll do... Really, they shifted the site from being a real resource for film fans looking for information and discussion, and instead shifted it to more like a trashy Entertainment Weekly or other shallow pop culture rag. Just note how every featured headline is some stupid themed slideshow or list, and the wording in the subject. The use of terms like 'such and such WE love' or 'OUR favorite whatever'... This 'be part of our stupid little club' mentality is right out of the shallow entertainment magazine playbook. That paired with their emphasis on making their own 'show' for the homepage and having interviews for film festivals and and red carpets proves they're more interested in being among the Access Hollywoods and Entertainment Weeklys of the world than catering to the actual film fan. That's where the money is, in their estimation.

Needham gave birth to IMDb in the hippy age of the Internet and saw it consumed by the Internet's cynical (read 'commercial') age.

The old sports boards posts (up to a certain point, at least) are archived and available to view on https://
(minus the space in "film" - this site doesn't allow posting of that site.)
It's fascinating and nostalgic to look back at the characters that populated the board a year, two years ago. Some were intelligent, some were hilarious, some were infuriating, some were genuinely insane. Some are on this board too.

Didn't know that extensive of an archive existed. I'm sure I'll enjoy going through some of the nostalgic old stuff in the future now.

IMDB used to be my most visited site. I loved it there. You could get ratings for anything and go to TV show boards whenever a new episode was on or something. I loved it. Now I never visit the site as it is pretty much worthless. I hope they are going under or at least not doing well, honestly. I thought getting rid of the message boards was a dumb decision and I wanted them to pay for it with their wallets. I hope they have, but this has become a pretty decent substitute.

So, sdm3, if "this site doesn't allow posting of that site" you just go and blatantly disrespect the rule by posting it anyway, with a space in-between? That's disingenuous. Can't you abide by this site's Admin's rules? He had good reasons to balk at that site. If you are here, basically, enjoying his house and all the effort he puts into it, the minimum courtesy would be to abide by what he wants, instead of sneaking around it to defeat his rule anyway. What you are doing is this: You knock on the door of someone's house where the owner is throwing a party. The owner answers the door, and you say, "this party sounds fun - can I come in?" The owner says, "sure, I'll let you in as long as you promise that you will abide by my rules in my house. For example, I don't like it when people sit back and put their feet on the table." You say "OK" and the owner lets you in. Then you put a napkin on a spot on a table, sit back, and put your feet up there. The owner comes to you and says, "didn't I tell you that I don't want people to put their feet on the table in my house?" You say, "well, I put a napkin in-between my feet and the table [your space added before the word film] therefore I'm not technically putting my feet on the table." You know, that won't fly. You'll probably be expelled from the party.

John, what's the issue here? Since we're all (maybe all, dunno) IMDb exiles wasn't sdm's post in this community's spirit, serving the interests of those assembled here? Seems a bit peevish to oppose it (and, indeed, censor it).

I do miss the boards for individual movies. And I miss a lot of posters from the old Sports Board. Undo, Triple_Double hell, even DeNiro. But these boards are less of a sewer than the old ones. Even the Politics Board. There was a poster there (navykurt) who routinely threatened the President of the US. Would he have done anything, probably not. But people didn't think this living hemorrhoid in Florida would do what he did. Also a poster who routinely doxxed posters (something Caesar). and was never banned.
