Often plays tough, no non-sense characters but almost a great comedic side in films like Young Frankenstein and The Royal Tenenbaums. Shame his final movie was Welcome to Mooseport. I think back to The Poseidon Adventure and his final moments at he calls out God.

It could have been worse; his last movie could have been Loose Cannons.

There's still a number of his films I haven't seen. I have been wanting to re-watch the French Connection 2 as I remember the heroin addiction scene to be pretty disturbing.

It could have been worse; his last movie could have been Loose Cannons. Dan Aykroyd had J.T. Walsh fired from that movie because he starred in Wired, the John Belushi bio-pic from the year earlier.

Loose Cannons was directed by Bob Clark and written by Richard Matheson and his son?
I havent seen it though. I remember Siskel and Ebert reviewing it.

Just reading the plot synopsis on Wikipedia is enough. "The film is about a hard-nosed cop who is teamed up with a detective with multiple-personality disorder to uncover a long-lost Nazi sex tape, featuring Adolf Hitler, which would jeopardize the political future of the German chancellor-elect."

He is a flat out boss. I pretty much like him in everything I've seen (haven't seen his whole filmography though) .
Even in silly shit like his role in Heartbreakers, he is aces .

When you said Last movie I immediately thought, ‘did Gene die? Why don’t I remember it?’
Then I see he’s just retired. But he’s almost 90 so I guess we should get ready.
I love him in westerns. I can really only think of Unforgiven and Quick and the Dead...but both of those characters help make those movies awesome.
He was fantastic in Poseidon Adventure also.

Like him in everything except Superman and The French Connection; well okay in the latter case, the movie surrounding Hackman. Popeye was fine.

Could spend hours. Bonnie and Clyde, Hoosiers, Mississippi Burning, The Conversation, even his small part in Reds. About the only film I didn’t care for his performance was A Bridge Too Far. Didn’t like is forced Polish accent. Greatest uncredited cameo could be Young Frankenstein .

I think back to The Poseidon Adventure and his final moments at he calls out God. He said that Poseidon Adventure made so much money that the studio heads wanted him to do a sequel, even though he died in the first one--They said he would play his own twin brother lol, Gene said "I don't think so"

He was always underrated, and seemed to make every movie he was in just a little better simply because of his presence. While not as "flashy" as his contemporaries like Nicholson, Pacino, or De Niro, for my money he was every bit their equal if not slightly more reliable to deliver a solid performance.

Loose Cannons might have worked as a darker film and with somebody other than Aykroyd. Playing it for laughs was a mistake.

Great actor but can only take so much of him. Not sure why.
French Connection was wonderful.
The Conversation, Scarecrow, Night Moves were also excellent.

One movie no one listed and I enjoy every rewatch is Enemy of the State. Really like the chemistry between Hackman and Smith there.

That was a pretty entertaining movie that's sort of been forgotten.
