A nightmare like ending in a movie about nightmares. What do you not get about it?

the ending of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Basically, Nancy thought she had awoken when the alarm clock went off and didn t realize it was the dream world until the car scene.

Studio wanted a sequel. Ending happily was how it was originally meant to be. Good move on studio part.

Studio didn't accept Craven's original ending and he shot an alternate one which left the door open for a sequel. More recent Blu-ray & DVD releases include 2 alternate endings as extra features (Craven's original + extented version of the cinema ending we all know). Craven's original ending isn't great but fits the story. Cinema version ending works but doesn't fit the story. Pick you poison I guess.

That's a good point. The third sequel has Nancy say she died in her sleep. Now Marge was last seen falling into a drunken slumber. Did Freddy cross the dreams over or go after her when he sent her daughter away.

Did Freddy cross the dreams over or go after her when he sent her daughter away. The point of the original ending is, the whole movie save the final "happy ending" scene was just one long nightmare. It seems that days pass and people die, Nancy keeps falling asleep and waking etc, but it has all been just one nightmare. That's what Nancy meant when she turned her back to Freddy and said "it's all just a dream". We literally do not see any real persons or places before last few minutes of Craven's preferred ending. Cinema version ending, being a hasty rewrite, ignores that.

Sequels notwithstanding, New Nightmare is good, possibly better than the original.

Sequels notwithstanding, New Nightmare is good, possibly better than the original. Still, isn't it a bit sad that easily the second best Nightmare (in my opinion) is about Craven telling us how he feels about the whole sequel business? Not to mention that even after that New Line just went and produced the godawful Freddy vs Jason.

It'd be more surprising if he liked some of them. I think it's good that he made a statement rather than do what someone else wanted him to do. I always liked part 2 myself. 3 is ok sans comedy. 1, 2 and 7 are 3 different takes on the same idea and the only ones I like in the series.

I have never understood why Freddy's Revenge is so disliked, it's so easily the best from 2-6 continuity series. Dream Warriors has some really good ideas and scenes but it's also the one where New Line again interfered, demanding it to be made more light and teen audience friendly.

I know back in the day it was b/c it changed the "rules". Today it gets ripped for being "gay". I've always been a big fan of it's ending. Poetic like the "Wolf Man" or something. Part 3 killed creativity.

I love the ending. Nancy's mom looks like a cardboard cutout when she gets dragged through the window in the front door.

That's a good point. The third sequel has Nancy say she died in her sleep. Now Marge was last seen falling into a drunken slumber. Did Freddy cross the dreams over or go after her when he sent her daughter away. And in part two, I believe they said she committed suicide. Then there is the fact that she simply disappeared after Freddy jumped on top of her.
