As in, you thought they were another type of artist than they actually are, just based on name.
Eagles of Death Metal
Smashing Pumpkins - thought they were an indie/shoegaze band from somewhere in southern England
Michelle Shocked - thought this was a band like Twisted Sister.

As band names go, I always thought that was a poor choice.

Skull Snaps
Take a poll, and 98% wouldn't guess the type of music they played based on their name.

The Birthday Massacre.
Judging by the name, I figured they were a speed metal band with a lead singer that would hit notes from the diaphragm.
Much to my surprise, the singer is female, and has the singing voice of a beautiful siren.

If the name isn't particularly misleading, the logo is. Party Cannon have the best logo of any black metal band:

I didn't think this, because I knew the music when I was really young, but it happens with people re the Grateful Dead.
Some where I was misled by the name:
10,000 Maniacs - Disappointed in this case. I was hoping they'd sound . . . well, at least kind of maniacal. I just thought they were boring.
M'Lumbo - for some reason I was expecting that maybe they'd be a Los Lobos-like latin-oriented band. That would have been fine with me, but they're very different than that, and I really like what they are instead. They're a fairly avant-garde, hard-to-describe band who does something in the vein of "cinematic soundscapes," sometimes with comedy elements.
Flying Burrito Brothers - I knew they were country-rock, but based on the name, I expected them to be something like the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band of country-rock. They're not. I would have preferred what I expected, but I like them okay.
Here's some M'Lumbo for the curious, by the way:

During the British Invasion, a few American bands gave themselves English-sounding names:
The Sir Douglas Quintet
The Beau Brummels
The Buckinghams

Meshuggah - I thought they were a Jewish parody band.
