Aren't all books pre-apocalyptic books?

I know what you are going for, OP. It wasn't the most fantastic book I ever read, but it was very interesting, so my initial suggestion is The End of the World News by Anthony Burgess. I really enjoyed it.

The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker. Highly recommended (well, I liked it).

I'm not sure if they count but several novels about WWIII (potentially) and nuclear attacks are sort of pre-apocalyptic:
Red Alert - Dr. Strangelove's source novel Fail Safe - Fail Safe's (the film) source novel Trinity's Child - By Dawn's Early Light source novel
