I don't understand Turkey. Every political facet seems alien and strange to me. I can't think of one aspect of the country I can relate to or would be proud of. Maybe I need to travel more, I dunno, it just seems so f'cking backward in every way.

Nice to tourists, though. I've been to Morocco a few times and I can hand-on-heart say the same. I don't mean to be prejudiced, it's just for me personally Turkey has seemed particularly insular, geo-politically hostile and inscrutable in recent years. Shame for Sukur, although reading the article he appeared aligned with the Islamic hard-line so I'm not sure how much I can relate to that either.

Well, the most Turks here in Germany are highly aggressive troublemaking scum: "Was guckst du?!" Well, the most here don't speak German, but the voice, body language and attitude can tell you a lot. In the end this guy had illegally altered the function of the car, had huge tax debts due to the city of cologne, was well-documented (assaults, drug traffic etc. pp.) and he was caught 2 months ago with the same issue: in the end the car was confiscated (gone for good => taxes)) and he lost his driver licence permantely - at least a happy end. Of course he was accusing the officers for racism.
