I've always found it fascinating how there have never been any NASCAR/Formula fans here. Are there? Maybe I'm being ignorant. Any interest in this? I've never been to one - I can imagine the tailgaiting can be a blast - but I've never understood the concept of watching cars drive around in circles. Can anybody out there fill me in on how you know who is winning the race without the commentators telling you? Like from my understanding - some cars 'lap' others cars over time. Seems tough to follow to me.

0 Nascar wins, though she did finish in the top 10 for the Xfinity (2nd tier) series a few years ago.
In Australia we mainly use road circuits. Even our speedways aren't ovals. I've been to a few events over the years. You see cars go by and cheer drivers or teams you like and are updated by a muffled radio commentary. I'm lucky enough to live less than an hour from the premier race track in Australia: Mount Panaroma in Bathurst. It's a street track that anyone can drive on whenever they like. I was involved in an accident there going at 80 mph when I was about 19 and nearly ended up going to the bottom of the mountain the hard way. Thank God for well positioned gravel sections. I've attended the event several times. There's usually around 160'000+ people there or 4× the population of Bathurst. It's a social event where you can hang with other car fans for a weekend and meet some of the drivers. It's a good time, but if you want a good view of the race, I reccomend your lounge at home.
