I always thought it was logical for the sun to be closer to the world during summer months -- quicker to heat up...
but then I learned about the trigonometry of astronomy and how the longer the sun is out, true, the further away the sun will be from the earth, but it will have longer to heat up.

When I was a kid I thought that people being all moralistic*, being "morally conservative," wanting to control others' behavior, not being laissez-faire and accepting of difference, etc. was a symptom of an older generation, where I thought that once I was an adult and other kids of my generation became adults (well, plus the slightly older hippies--I was born in 1962), we'd be able to rid society of all of that sort of crap. Boy was I wrong about that! Footnote: "moralistic" is different than "moral." Here's a conventional definition of "moralistic"--"overfond of making moral judgements about others' behavior; too ready to moralize." "Moralize" is "comment on issues of right and wrong, typically with an unfounded air of superiority."

When Magic Johnson got diagnosed with HIV I thought he would be dead within a few years. Sometimes, it's good to be wrong.

I wrongly thought that there were no female film directors back in the silent era...in fact, there were a good number of female silent film directors, such as Alice Guy, Mabel Normand, and various others.
I also thought that nothing remained of the TV coverage of the Queen Mother's 1958 visit to Australia...in fact, various kinescope recordings do survive, unfortunately none of them have been digitised yet.

I really thought Hillary would beat Trump in the 2016 US Presidential election. By a landslide, too.

I thought the creation story in the Bible was literally true.
I also believed that Clinton would beat Trump. Bet some money on it actually.
I also thought when we looked at the stars we see them as they are today.

I really thought Hillary would beat Trump in the 2016 US Presidential election. By a landslide, too. I'm with you. Don't feel bad. She would have done it handily if not for Russian meddling, plus a couple of other factors I won't bring up in this forum--lest I start a flame war. After all, despite everything that was thrown at her, she still won the popular vote by nearly 3 million. We are the only country that has that peculiar device, the Electoral College. Another thing I was wrong about: I thought by now Congress would have done something to help prevent mass shootings besides offering all-too-glib "thoughts and prayers" for victims and their families.

I thought Shahid Afridi hated Indians in general. I'm also surprised by his comment, “I think after Pakistan, the two countries where I have received most love and respect are India and Australia.”

I really thought Hillary would beat Trump in the 2016 US Presidential election. By a landslide, too. I think almost everybody thought that, which is one reason why Trump won.

I think almost everybody thought that, which is one reason why Trump won. i didn't think that but i knew to wait for the election. but i did know that what was counted was who voted. when most of the people against trump didn't even vote, that's their fault.

...in Dr Johnson's famous dictionary, patriotism is defined as the last resort of a scoundrel. It is not the last resort, but the first. -Ambrose Bierce
(originally, I disagreed with this, but now I am not so sure)

Back in the late 1980s, when the Fox network announced that it was developing those little animated bumpers on The Tracey Ullman Show into a regular TV series, I thought it was a foolish idea and such a show would never last. Now there are people in their thirties who can't remember a world without The Simpsons.

I thought iPads/tablets would be a 4-6yr fad.
I still remember the chatter... why would we want giant touchscreens when we have smartphones.

All Christians/religious people are brought up to believe our religion as law-- like God's hand will strike you dead right now- law.

I thought nothing remained of 1950s TV news aired on Australia's ABC network....although none of the newscasts survive, it turns out that many of the individual news reports survive, although unfortunately few have been digitised.
I also thought that there would be few classic cars in New Zealand...in fact, my searching of flickr suggests a good number exist there.
