If you're a fan, I guess it's disappointing in terms of legacy of the program but it doesn't change what the team accomplished. Those of us here in Western Massachusetts old enough to remember UMass' 1996 Final Four run still appreciate what that team accomplished despite it being vacated due to Marcus Camby receiving gifts from an agent. I mean, this team went to the Final Four! Not exactly blue chip players outside of Camby. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995β96_UMass_Minutemen_basketball_team I would think the whole situation is more embarrassing than anything else to Louisville.

It is so ridiculous to strip away a title like that, you canβt change the result of the tourney and the fact that Louisville won it, everyone will always remember Louisville as the 2013 national champions regardless if itβs official or not. I just find it really dumb.

Yeah, it only really applies to "official history". We all know who won the 2013 NCAA Tournament. As we know UMass was Final Four in '96, Michigan went to two final with the Fab Five, Reggie Bush won the Heisman in 2005, etc. It's embarrassing to have to expunge all references to a Championship, another final Four, 123 wins et al. It really hurts to take the banners down. It's also very embarrassing to think that someone at Louisville thought it was a great idea to pay hookers to sleep with recruits. And we know there's more tainted banner that still fly. Probably all of UCLA's titles under John Wooden, due to Sam Gilbert paying them handsomely. But it's only cheating if you get caught.

That's my only real issue with the punishment. They all broke the rules, and 'officially' stripping them of their accomplishments is the only real way to try to curb this behavior, as prestige is a major motivation for fielding a winning team (the other being money of course). What frustrates me is thinking how many other programs are doing the same kind of shady stuff as we speak, and they'll never get caught. And I want to know how guys who probably can't read get into Duke. Also, I'm guessing it was Pitino's idea. It sure seems like something he would come up with.

My brother was recruited as a HS basketball player (not by anyone big) and he played HS with a kid who did get recruited by big schools (someone names Laettner). It doesn't matter if it's Duke, UCLA, Louisville or Iona, the first thing they show a recruit on an official visit is the history. The banners and the trophy case. Be it National Championship hardware or a MEAC regular season trophy. Message; "Be a part of this. Add your own legacy." Conversely, you don't want to see your legacy put into mothballs. It hurts to punish players who didn't bonk a hooker. But what can you do? And the biggest thing about this is the proverbial "Sword of Damocles" hanging over Louisville. If anything happens again, can you say "Death Penalty"? And that hurts recruiting bad.
