The book King of jazz, Paul whitemanTechnicolor revue, either James layton or David Pierce was labeling the characterizing of black African tribal men in the cartoon as being racist. The song bluebirds and blackbirds and the dark silhouette ending as being racist also implied because cause blakc wre being denied tha they were the fonder of jazz as being rascist in the film,Carl Laemmle did not hire any black performer.First of all true that the black African tribes were being characterized, but so was Paul Whiteman as the fat white character. Should have the writer state that that too was being insensitive toward overweight people? everyone in the cartoon was being characterized. The question is that if the tribe characterized was for a racist reason, is a question mark. The song bluebird and blackbirds had nothing to do with black people, but animals and the rhythm boys darkening to shadows was to end that scene to go into another. If it was racist they would have been dressing up in blackface. It's true that the producers were emphasizing that the whites created jazz, rather than the blacks and did not hire any black performers, but to say that it was on purpose or not is a question mark.Warner brother did hire Ethel Waters to do two number in On with the show, but, you see at the time white studios were dealing with the southern bible belt. It's most likely when on with show came to Montgomery Ala, back in 29 or 30, probably played at the now gone Tivorly or even Paramount or the Empire, that the scene from on with the show was cut out.Maybe Laemmle was being precautious. The writer or writers in another chapter were being a bit sympathetic towards Murdock.Either of them was comparing him to Carl Laemmle. Are you kidding!Carl Laemmle was not as cruel and greedy and power hungry that Mudrock is.Don't let this prevent You from buying the book.
