According to the article, there's a "hole" in the fantasy field currently. After "Game of Thrones," can there ever be a movie with dragons in it that anyone will care about?

I kept insisted that Peter Jackson adapt the most excellent Temeraire series via telepathy. But evidently, my efforts were in vain.

Well, I liked the movie with Jeremy Irons and Thora Birch, so I'll keep an open mind on this one. At least till I see the cast and some promo pics or a teaser. I can make some judgements then on whether or not I'd see it.

Should have been a TV show on HBO - Game of Thrones style. A movie can't cover the epic proportions and will be a fail. TV shows > movies.

According to the article, there's a "hole" in the fantasy field currently. After "Game of Thrones," can there ever be a movie with dragons in it that anyone will care about? Imho the strength of the dragons in GoT is their spare use. In many seasons the vast majority of the protagonists considered them as a myth only (Tywin lecturing Joffrey => sickly creatures and skull of the size of an apple), but then the moment - the moment when the Dothraki screamers storm towards the Lannister army, and Jaime still believes: we can make it...and then...first the voice, and then Drogon coming out of the clouds...epic, fuck movies. This moment was the work of years, and this moment was the harvest...just like Hardhome etc. pp. It 's so well written and well prepared...step by step you could see the things grow and reaching and matching into each other. As I remember the show, the dragon (and there was actually only one) was rather present in mind - if at all - and the group had to pass many other, different adventures on their journey and the main adversary was V'ger (sp?) It is a ver long time that I saw the cartoon - but I liked it very much for the journey and adventures, and the particular skills and equipment of each group member. Tiamat, the dragon, showed up as actual protagonist in the final episode IIRC and he was neither an friend or enemy of the group. They fought him, and they had to do it on a drogan graveyard, because onl there their weapons had the power to defeat him...but they they didn't because something else happened, but I can't remeber what...the journey was the goal. Hence, I do not agree with the article, but I'm confessed that the movie will fail for it will lack the time to develop the charcaters properly, the world and its lore and history, its mystic, and the will shift the focus from the adventures and wounders of the world to V'ger and Tiamat. Edit: OK: Tiamat is a she and even in the English version the voice is provided by a guy...they fight her twice, not once...in the first episode when they stumpled into the realm, and in the episode "The Dragon's Graveyard", but they ended up with making a pact to join forces against Venger. But obviously he can escape. There are other dragons but not prominent ones - a little fairy dragon and her people, and some fire dragons but without names or lasting meaning.

Yeah, what makes GoT work is that it is set in a wholly believable world that you can relate to, where notions like "honor" are just ideals and people are actually driven by baser instincts of greed, power, or just plain survival. Magical elements were gradually introduced, and for the most part didn't even become major plot-driving devices until later seasons.

NO point in making this unless its going to get the big budget treatment it needs to get made. If you do this half assed you will get a half assed movie. Like the last one!

Same way I liked the Dwayne Johnson HERCULES movie, the Michael Fassbender CENTURION movie, or the Kelly Hu movie SURF NINJAS. I see it, I'm entertained, I buy a copy when it comes out on DVD/etc. Simple. I also am a sucker for anything with dragons.

Yeah, but as awful as all those movies were (and they were!), they were at least better than the DnD with Thora Birch! Even Surf Ninjas, and that's saying a lot!
