I feel the X-Men film series is at a point where they could use some new blood and a fresh perspective behind the camera. It seems the proposed X-Men: Supernova will be another attempt to translate the Dark Phoenix Saga to the screen and so these the the directors I'd like to see take on that story. I've intentionally targeted directors with a background in horror as I feel they need someone who can fully communicate the terrifying nature of Jean Grey's transformation and embrace some of the more outlandish aspects of the X-Men world. I also think that comic book movies thrive with slightly unconventional directors rather than more mainstream choices and hopefully a horror director bring something new to the series help X-Men stand out in a crowded market place. 1. David Robert Mitchell
Mitchell came to my attention with the excellent It Follows, a brilliantly tense film exploring themes of sexuality. In addition he has a good variety of genres to his name having previously directed a coming of age drama and has a film noir project out later this year. 2. Mike FlanaganFlanagan's Oculus was a great reality bending story and his subsequent output has been pretty solid. Plus this is a guy who refuses to make found footage films. 3. Fede AlvarezAlvarez's Evil Dead was one of the best horror remakes of decent years and dealt with possession and friends being forced to battle one another. And those are my top three choices. Agree? Disagree? Any other suggestion?

It would be a serious mistake to make the DPS right now. They should go for something more grounded.

Be that as it may the writers have said they're going the Dark Phoenix route so that's what I'm working with. I only brought it up in the original post because the choice in storyline informs my choice of directors.

My mistake, I thought it was official but it seems it's just rumour. However given how blatantly they telegraphed the Phoenix in Apocalypse it does seem the most likely route.

I think they should go Phoenix instead of Dark Phoenix. We really didn't get that feeling of actually caring for her using her heightened powers and the dangers of it. In both Apocalypse and X2, they had a woman that couldn't control it until the end (I guess) so we didn't get that Phoenix movie. If they went right into Dark Phoenix on the next one it would feel like Star Wars Ep2 and 3 where we get the start of the Clone Wars and the very end of it. But I do like your idea of getting a horror director to do X-men movies. Especially one that knows how to use effects (practical and digital). Not really to make them all light horror movies, but because they are the ones that would think that you can go anywhere and do anything.

The Phoenix thing was to show Xavier's development from DOFP. Where he is not controlling people anymore.

I think Fede is a bit too brutal for Xmen, his movies while well paced and entertaining AF, have an unrelenting darkness to them, I mean his next project is either Don't Breathe 2 (which is so messed up a studio may not want to touch it) or a Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequel/reboot.
the first two can work though, they feel more malleable, Fede feels like a Fincher, Scorsese type of director, which means it's his ball game.

I think Rupert Wyatt would be a good choice. Good call. Him or somebody like Gareth Edwards, Francis Lawrence, or even Joss Whedon.

Last I head Singer wasn't going to be involved with the next X-Men film as he'd be busy with the TV Gifted series. But since Proteus's powers include reality warping and body possession then I'd stick with my first instinct of using a horror specialist.

I really want David Lynch to direct a comic boom movie, or Mike Leigh. They are both very unconventional choices and would make very interesting films.
As far as conventional choices go (despite still being somewhat unconventional), I would love to see Spielberg direct X-Men: Supernova.
