At the sheer amount of people getting into D&D these days.
I just found out my sister, who normally is very hesitant to get into geeky stuff, has ended up joining a play group with her friends.
Then there are those therapy sessions for depression and social anxiety where the councilors play D&D with kids to get them to be more comfortable expressing themselves.
Whole families playing the game an tailoring it to their household's relationship dynamic.
I'm surprised at the whole 180* the game has taken since its days as a bogeyman for soccer moms everywhere.

I remember growing up with D&D being one of those scary/demonic things that I was never to go near (Quija board was another). I was rather surprised myself the first time I saw people playing it how geeky it was. I'm rather surprised that it became so demonized.

I played D & D all the time as a kid. Never had any demonic fallout! Just hours and hours of fun. The 70s and 80s were full of all kinds of boogeymen. Remember what a big deal used to be made of backmasking and Knights In Satan's Service and stuff like that?
I loved growing up as a kid during that era. So many fun taboos to allow ones imagination to run wild on.

There is a tendency for parties of adventurers to become murder hobos, but if run well it can be really great for moral conundrums and general fun.

My brother played it back when he was in high school, with his friends.

I once attended a Dungeons and Dragons meeting at university at the suggestion of a friend who was a member. It was the geekiest thing I've ever been a part of, and I'm a borderline autistic 'nerd' myself. Couldn't understand the appeal of it in the least.

I once attended a Dungeons and Dragons meeting at university at the suggestion of a friend who was a member. It was the geekiest thing I've ever been a part of, and I'm a borderline autistic 'nerd' myself. Couldn't understand the appeal of it in the least. They used to say D&D was a corrupting tool of satan. This isn't true. If anything, I've long since learned that D&D is more of a mirror reflecting who you are, and what you want to aspire to be. In all my years of being a DM, I've learned that it is extremely difficult for players to go against their nature, no matter how much they claim they want to "be something new". That guy that who wants to play a greedy thief? I've never seen such a generous individual in all my games. Was kind of expected given that the player himself is a gentle soul who literally gets depressed whenever he sees children begging in the streets here in my home town, and ends up buying something for them to eat. Whereas a guy who wanted to play a virtuous paladin ended up being a bit of an amoral ass because he is literally wasting his life being a lazy heel within his family. But yeah, geeks often have to start off by working through their problems, which is probably why it looked so fucking weird to you. The smart ones amongst them should use that "reflection" of themselves and try to work on the elements of their personality that could use improvement.
