AGAIN THE RINGER - 1965 Rare krimi sequel. The part of particular fascination was where a kid was playing with tigers and riding on one's back. A tiger even took an angry swipe at him and he didn't seem bothered.
BLOOD ON SATAN'S CLAW 1971 --50th anniversary viewing. Patrick Wymark's second to last movie. I think it is effectively creepy with demon-possession and this was 2 years before the Exorcist. There's a strong gothic feeling to this because the landscape is used for sinister effect.
"I mean to run this devil of yours to earth!"
"I am ready to return, but understand, I shall use undreamt-of measures."

CURSE OF THE SWAMP CREATURE 1968 Yes it is a bad movie but I still liked it. John Agar, Francine York--I see she has done a number of sci-fi stuff in the 60s--low budget movies in between tv gigs. She does an admirable job emoting some terrible lines especially during the incoherent finale where she pleads with the monster.
THE BIG DOLL HOUSE 1971 --Although it gave Pam Grier her a star-making turn in exploitation film, Roberta Collins is a trailer park drive-in version of Carroll Baker. I notice a similarity. Sid Haig provides good moments. But the real stand out is Brooke Mills. She is doing the Woman with the Golden Arm--considering how trashy this movie is--sometimes the acting surprises one. I see her turning up in 70s movies and tv in supporting roles but she certainly demonstrates acting ability here. The HD quality is really good too--the print I watched looked great. Some of the outdoor scenes--you could believe it was shot yesterday. As a movie it is pretty bad--it seems they tacked on a voice over for the ending to change the onscreen events.

Escape From the Planet of the Apes 1971 Considering that this is the second sequel, it was daring to take a couple of characters who were secondary in the previous installments and promote them to the focus, going in a completely different direction--yet remaining suspenseful and emotionally involving. Also the supporting characters are effectively smart and dynamic. Eric Braeden has one of the most profound missions as a movie villain--he's no cartoon antagonist. He's thinking about the future of the world-as a scientist it would matter to him very much, and at the same time, the US president is intelligent too-there was a 1971 critic review which highlighted that character. It plays a little loose with the facts of the first movie--since they did not know it was Earth-and yet Cornelius now knows that the Sacred Scrolls had information on Earth history. Ignoring that, this is a pretty darn good economical sequel with some funny moments and a poignant finale.

A Chorus Line (1985) / Richard Attenborough
Second viewing on film and I have seen the play. It's still entertaining...
Zach (Michael Douglas) : Goddammit, now can't ANYBODY up there hear me! Just let your hair down! Can't you talk? All of you, just talk, to me, to each other!... Jesus Christ!

Closing the Ring (2007) / Richard Attenborough When a ring is discovered near Belfast, Ireland (years after the war), a young girl (Marie) discovers that her mother had been married before and that her mother and father's marriage was only part of a "fraternal agreement" among three young men. This movie that moves back and forth in time (WWII and present day) somewhat foreshadows the TV series Outlander. It is contrived in that in her mother's first husband had a substitute for him in case he was killed during the war. Ethel Ann (Shirley MacLaine) : I was 21 years old. My life was over. Marie (Neve Campbell) : 21? Mom, that was before you married Daddy, before I was born. What happened? Ethel Ann : It's none of your business.
Marie : Everybody needs to talk. Jack (Christopher Plummer) : No, honey, everbody needs to cry. And your mother never did.
Ethel Ann : What's happening, Jimmy? Jack : You're grieving, girl...

I would like to see a reverse of this, a world where dummies go through life but one uses a human for a show and the human gains control over the dummy

OPEN SEASON 1974 -- It might be considered a Deliverance rip-off but that would be unfair. It's a tense and very well-acted suspense film--which explores the idea of toxic masculinity yet avoids preaching--especially given the function of William Holden in the story. I could see this remade today where Cornelia Sharpe's character has the defining role. Her performance is really good. Peter Fonda is in a nasty part at a time when he did a lot of good guy roles. But this was not Hollywood-made.

I have it on DVD, but the quality of the print is inferior and I turned it off after five minutes.

There are a few different endings to the movie. The one I have watched the most is where there is an epilogue scene with dialogue.
Blanca Estrada is the girl at the start of the movie. Seen her in a few Spanish movies of the 70s. I don't know whether this song is sad or annoying. I can't decide. Maybe both.
