No episode in all of Star Trek is more frustrating to watch for me. Because it illustrates a Star Trek that could have been and wasn't.
The Enterprise is a ship of war. Not one of peace. I like that because, while peace may be our goal, it is very boring to watch on a SF tv show.
No children on the Enterprise! Good that. Who the hell ever thought kids on a starship made any sense at all?
I much prefer a real and enjoyable hostility between Picard and Riker.
The Klingons are our enemies and they should. They are ridiculous. So is Worf, by the way.
Patrick Stewart is great in many scenes in Star Trek but I don't think he has ever been better than he is here but his greatness makes the other actors in the supporting cast look even weaker. You take Stewart out of this series and it's in real trouble. This is why TOS will always be markedly superior to TNG. The cast is better. And it's not bogged down with political correctness.
Whoopi Goldberg is an Oscar winner but she is so clearly the worst actor on this show and it is even more glaring in the one on one scenes with Stewart.

I liked the bridge design and lighting (like Generations), but for me the war made no sense. If the Klingons are so weak that they can't defend themselves from a Romulan attack how could they be winning a war with the Federation and it lasting for 20 years (especially when TNG Klingons have been presented as as foolish/incompetent A Matter of Honor, Heart of Glory,Sins of the Father, etc. many times and in the DS9 episode "The Way of the Warrior" Captain Sisko destroyed several Klingon vessels with just a single Space Station) Also if the war was going so badly for the Federation neither Cmdr. Riker, Data of even Georgi would be left on the Enterprise and instead be commanding their own ships and crews.

The children really hampered the show and Guinan was such a godawful character. Deep Space 9 was IMO the best of the newer shows for interesting characters. They make the humans so stilted but the aliens can act more normal. Right from the early episodes-I remember one where something causes the spaceship inhabitants to become incoherent in speech and Quark is shown jabbering away with someone in a medical bay and Odo comes by and says: So Quark, not even you were spared the effects. And Quark says: You underestimate the Ferengi brain Constable, I am just here to make sure none of these 'patients' are faking to get out of their debts. You! Money! Owe! Me!"
On the other hand it went too far into soap opera land by the end of it.
Voyage could have been good, but they ruined it by having the Maquis get along too fast with the Federation crew. Species 8472 was cool though.
