7th Voyage of Sinbad
The Golden Voyage of Sinbad
Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger
I just watched the first two. Thought the first was ok, with Harryhausen's creatures being the clear stars. Bland acting kind of ruined the story.
Really enjoyed the second though: a great fantasy/adventure that was clearly a major inspiration for Raiders of the Lost Arc. The dancing Kali statue was one of the best FX I've seen in a pre-Star Wars era movie.
It's odd that these movies are sort of lost to relative obscurity now. I didn't grow up with them so I had to discover them through my research of old FX movies.
Thoughts?

Great films. Some of Harryhausen's best work.

Great films. Some of Harryhausen's best work. How about the third one? I've read that it's the worst of the three. I plan to rent it next week.

I loved the first one and really liked the second one. I thought the third one was a major step down in quality though I liked Patrick Wayne as Sinbad even if he wasn't as good as John Philip Law who I think did the best as the character. In Golden Voyage, Caroline Munro played one of the f*cking hottest female characters ever in a fantasy movie.

I enjoy all of them but the third may be slightly less great than the first 2.

I love all of them, but there is a battle in my head right now about the hotter "Sinbad girl," either Caroline Munro from "Golden" or Jane Seymour from "Eye"... My goodness they were beautiful.

Golden Voyage is my favorite. The Harryhausen film that seemed to have the best story-acting was the Valley of Gwangi. The rest tend to be a mixed bag. Eye of the Tiger had problems. Good idea, problematic execution. Wanamaker was a bad choice-he didnt want to do a fantasy film. Seymour was underutilized but Troughton had some good moments like the giant wasp sequence. Patrick Wayne needed to be dubbed.

I'd say that Hollywood ought to remake these; like an Arabian Nights styled Indiana Jones where he encounters different mythical creatures and places in each movie. But then I saw how they handled CLASH OF THE TITANS (2010).

Sad about this series. Sinbad had seven voyages but Harryhausen only managed to make three movies.
It might have helped if there had been only one actor playing Sinbad and not such a long break between movie #1 and movie #2.
IMO "The Golden Voyage of Sinbad" was the best, and John Phillip Law was the best Sinbad. Kerwin Matthews was effeminate, and Patrick Wayne had all the personality of a dead mule.

Haha Matthews was effeminate for a good reason but I think he captured the 50s matinee idol type well enough.
JPL was the best overall.
Robert Shaw was the floating head!

BTW there was an Italian Sinbad film made in 1973 as well. More of a typical Euro comedy approach but the location shooting was about equal. Sinbad spends most of the movie in a diaper. www.imdb.com/title/tt0070695/

Did anyone else watch that tv show that aired 4 or 5 years ago?

I saw one from 2010 Sinbad and the Minotaur--Australian I think. Soooo bad. The woman is wearing the same kind of outfit that Caroline Munro wore but it just doesn't compare.
I dont even remember the Sinbad. The fx were terrible--they shot a big chunk of it at night outside a tent on the beach it seemed.

I loved all three as a kid but as an adult, 7th Voyage is the clear standout. An absolute classic, Harryhausen's greatest film and - after the 1940 Thief of Bagdad - my pick for greatest fantasy/sword & sorcery epic of all. Brilliant Bernard Herrmann score, too.
