It was 50 years ago today ...
DJ Annie Nightingale
A walk down Carnaby Street in 1968
"The centre of London's fashion world may now be in the east, but in the mid-60s Carnaby Street was where it was at, and these photos give us a glimpse at what life was like on this exciting street in its heydey. Swinging London was in full force, and young people flocked to W1’s boutique-lined streets in the hopes of spotting a Beatle or a Rolling Stone while shopping for shorter hemlines and looser trouser legs. If you thought Brick Lane was bad, it’s got nothing on the dandies of Carnaby Street-past, and some of the ‘looks’ that graced this historic street would raise a few eyebrows even in experimental Soho. In fact, The Kinks actually wrote the song 'Dedicated Follower Of Fashion', poking fun at the "Carnebetian army" - the fashion victims who strutted through Carnaby. Shops like Lady Jane, Lord John and The Mod Male were popular hotspots for the capital's fashionable young things, while lithe model-types (hoping to emulate the popular ‘Twiggy look’ of the era) loitered on the street’s crowded pavements."
- Liz Connor & Gareth Richman unveil recently unearthed photos of Carnaby Street in 'The Evening Standard'
'The street is a mirror, For our country, Reflects the rise and fall, Of our nation, The street that was a legend, Is a mockery, A part of the British tradition, Gone down the drain ...

Mary Quant was one of the most famous designers of Carnaby Street. Here she is with Twiggy.

Mary Quant was one of the most famous designers of Carnaby Street. Here she is with Twiggy. We owe Mary Quant a lot; her and radical European mini skirt designers like Frenchman Andre Courreges and Italian Pierre Cardin.

No discussion about Swinging London would be complete without a bit of this:

Pardon me for getting esoteric, but this photo is a reminder of the late-60s resurgence of turn-of-the-century Art Nouveau design - evident in the shop window text and art - that took place at the time. Its exuberantly expressive and sinuously organic style seemed quite harmonious with the era, and was notably prevalent on poster art then circulating for concerts, political messaging and the like.

Funny, I was just watching Pulp Fiction again and never noticed that Vincent Vega (John Travolta) was reading Modesty Blaise in the bathroom twice in the film. While it predates 1968, the film adaption was made in 1966 and was definitely "swinging" with a beautiful Monica Vitti. I think this was the first time I saw Pulp Fiction in HD, and the old VHS and DVD versions of the film were too low res to make out the title.

Even the car companies were in on the action... Well, at least Plymouth and Dodge... I wonder if any of these were imported to England with the "Mod Top".
