There are conventions about word usage. Conventions are not correct. "Math" is the convention some places. "Maths" is the convention in other places.

What is maths? Can you use it in a sentence? I've never heard or seen the word used before. I have a maths test tomorrow.As others have noted it's a convention depending where you live. US/Canada uses "math", UK/Australia/NZ uses "maths".

As there is more than one aspect of mathematics (should that be mathematic?) then the obvious consequence is that the plural should be used. Hence mathematics and maths for short. "Quod erat demonstrandum."
