Metallica are also on record as thinking the Death Magnetic mastering sounded good. Proof positive that plenty of musicians have no fucking clue what good audio sounds like. We need more musicians with ears for audio like Donald Fagen and Walter Becker. Say what you want about Steely Dan, but they knew what a well-recorded, mixed, and mastered album sounds like.

I just don't want them to pull a "George Lucas" on it if they do any remastering/remixing to it.

Those were horrendous.

Indeed, though I think that was due to some legal issue of them not wanting to pay the original bassist/drummer or something like that. It was a really rare case, though.

I haven't been impressed with the production on any Metallica album before s/t, to be honest.

And then of course you have the comedy drums on St Anger. Old Lars is a one-man wrecking crew. Has any other artist had so many poorly produced albums as this lot?

The production for the black album is immaculate.

The production for the black album is immaculate. Still remember the first time I listened to The Unforgiven on headphones and when the guitars kicked in and the roof was blown off.

There's a reason Ulver were able to credibly spread the rumor they recorded Nattens Madrigal in the forest on an 8-track: I've honestly just heard so much poorly recorded metal that I'm almost numb to it now. Though Metallica are an odd case because they're a rare metal band that have the money and fame necessary to hire the best producers to create something good-sounding, yet they still managed to produced AJFA and St. Anger.

I remember that album getting a DVD-Audio disc that has the entire album in 5.1 surround sound. I never got the chance to hear it, but my god I can't imagine how good it would sound.

If they really wanted to do justice to AJFA, they should remix with Jason turned way up and the drums so low you can't hear them.

That's why I like the versions of the songs from AJFA that appear on the Live S**t Binge & Purge album. Songs like Harvester of Sorrow sound so much better.
